Position Information

Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications Position Summary

This position will help submitting veterinarians diagnose illnesses by conducting routine microbiological tests. Duties may include initial setup of samples, reading/analyzing culture plates from submitted samples, subculturing and identification of significant isolates. The position will assist with maintaining quality control within the laboratory section and be responsible for data entry of case results.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

• Experience in a laboratory environment.

• Experience in Biology and/or Microbiology.

• Ability to utilize/analyze computer data, and the ability to enter data.

• Ability to work well with a team.

• Some weekend and holiday work is involved.

• Extended periods of sitting conducting bench work and some light lifting.

Duties/Responsibilities

Duties/Responsibilities

• Primary inoculation of the samples received for bacterial and or fungal culture.

• Subculture of significant bacteria and set up tests on isolates.

• Interpret results for identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing.

Percentage of time 50 Duties/Responsibilities

• Assist in reading and recording daily temperatures for the incubators, refrigerators and freezers.

• Maintain daily rotation of stored completed refrigerated samples.

• Assist in maintaining quality control, quality assurance, and standard operating protocols in the laboratory.

• Assist with ongoing research projects.

Percentage of time 25 Duties/Responsibilities

• Enter results and data in computer.

Percentage of time 15 Duties/Responsibilities

• Assist with diagnostic services testing in other disciplines of Microbiology and Molecular Diagnostics research when needed.

Percentage of time 5 Duties/Responsibilities

• Use of the autoclave, water distiller/ deionizer, Millipore water purification system and drying oven.
