Laboratory Technician IIPrimary duties of the Laboratory Technician are: Collecting, labeling, processing and packaging of specimens appropriately for shipment to the performing lab.

Scheduling and giving instructions for the collection of specimens, performs limited instrument maintenance. Performs computer Data entry of patient demographics, lab test orders, and international Classification of Diseases (ICD-9) codes into the Laboratory Information System (LIS). Frequently performs venipunctures as ordered by health care provider, provides courier service. Assist in providing after hour Coverage (ON CALL weekend and holidays). Must demonstrate and conform to all safety standards and procedures.

Must drive a state vehicle and maintain required driver training. Will work in central supply and will help with stocking supplies

Essential Job Functions:

Collection, preparation and processing of specimen. Performs duties and tasks and enters data, patient demographics, orders, generates lab reports.

Electronically retrieves and transfers lab results and other data. Function as an operator of the Laboratory Information System (LIS) to manually enter results and generate Reports. Tracks request to Austin State Hospital (ASH), Texas Department of Health (TDH) and local lab for lab test and follows up on overdue results, by fax and/or phone.

Keeping with HHSC and AbSSLC Infection Control rules and safety policies. Serves as a point of contact on specimen, request and report problems. Reconciles the accuracy of patient information with reimbursement information forms and ensures that all data areas are updated as needed to ensure the accuracy of demographics and billing information.

Codes lab test in the LIS and for local laboratory with diagnosis codes for eligible patients to facilitate the reimbursement process. Locates proper codes in reference Performs limited maintenance on centrifuges, e.g. cleaning and checking/changing brushes. Actively participates in weekend/holiday coverage for call.

Adequate coverage is maintained. Responds to call in a prompt and timely manner, Regularly uses appropriate personal protective equipment e.g., gloves, shoes, clothing. All contaminated items are properly disposed of in a timely manner. sources as necessary.

Manages files of confidential medical reports, personnel files, lab records, reports and Correspondence files to ensure the availability of information. Performs related secretarial and clerical task as needed for assigned to ensure the continuity of delivery of services. Provides courier service for samples, X-rays, etc.

Maintains current Texas Driver License and remains cleared to drive state vehicle. Ability to help with stocking supplies Knowledge Skills Abilities:


Skilled in performing venipunctures. Skilled in the operation and maintenance of centrifuges.

Skill in data entry for the laboratory information system Knowledge of specimen requirements and handling. Knowledge of laboratory safety and infection control measures. Ability to work with ID population Knowledge of approaches and issues related to age specific and patient care Ability to operate a motor vehicle and a good driving record Ability to work with others, to follow instructions, and to accept and learn new task willingly. Knowledge of organizational ethics and awareness of workplace and patient population diversity; Registration or Licensure

Requirements:

Certification in Phlebotomy Initial Selection Criteria:

Graduation from an accredited high school or GED, plus (1) year of work experience performing laboratory test and duties.One (1) semester (15 semester hours) of accredited college work in a related field is preferred. Experience working with people with intellectual disabilities is preferred. Additional Information:

Salary Note: The salary offered will follow HHS starting salary guidelines which are typically made at or near the minimum of the salary range.

Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position. The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours. SUPERVISION EXERCISED This position exercises no direct supervision. Examples of Duties Collect samples and prepare for testing including water, wastewater, and sludge. Calibrate, maintain, and set up equipment for a variety of laboratory operations. Clean laboratory equipment and facilities. Perform chemical and mathematical calculations. Prepare and maintain quality control records, report files, and daily logs of samples and testing procedures. Conduct standard and specialized chemical and microbiological examinations of regular and special samples of raw and treated water, wastewater, and industrial waste. Prepare samples for shipment to other laboratories. Laboratory Technician II Oversee and participate in conducting a variety of standard and specialized chemical analyses and microbiological examinations of regular and special samples. Supervise the preparation of specific laboratory equipment and standard reagents. Prepare and maintain necessary records and reports. Prepare and maintain quality control records, report files, and daily logs of samples and testing procedures. Assist with the establishment and implementation of laboratory procedures. Must have at least 24 hours of chemistry or 16 hours of microbiology, or 16 hours of biology including 4 hours of microbiology. Laboratory Technician Trainee Experience: Experience in technical laboratory work is desired. License or Certificate: Must obtain a Class "D" Water License or a class "D" wastewater license within twelve (12) months of employment. A valid Texas driver's license or the ability to obtain one within ten (10) days of employment with the City of Abilene is required. Laboratory Technician I Experience: A minimum of six (6) months supervised training and experience in a laboratory or at the City of Abilene Environmental Laboratory. License or Certificate: A minimum of a Class "D" Water License, and a class "D" wastewater license is required. A valid Texas driver's license is required. Laboratory Technician II Experience: Between two (2) and five (5) years of experience in conducting water, chemical, and microbiological laboratory tests is required. License or Certificate: Must have a Class "C" surface water, wastewater, and laboratory certificate/license. A valid Texas driver's license is required. Special Requirements: Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment: Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, and climb. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Exposure to cold, heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, and confined space work. Exposure to chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards.
