The Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) is the state of Florida's social services agency. Within DCF, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH) Program office is recognized as the single state authority for substance abuse and mental health services. The Office of SAMH is statutorily responsible for the planning, evaluation, and implementation of a comprehensive statewide system of care for the prevention, treatment, and recovery of children and adults with serious mental illnesses or substance use disorders.

North Florida Evaluation and Treatment Center (NFETC) is a 216 bed, all male, forensic, mental health rehabilitation facility. The Center is located in northeast Gainesville, Florida on 639 picturesque acres with regular sightings of deer, turkey and other wildlife. NFETC employs a variety of entry level to leadership positions including food service, maintenance, direct care, nurses, counselors, rehab therapists, medical doctors, security, psychiatrists, and psychologists.

This is a highly responsible and professional position that will serve as Laboratory Technician II- F/C. This position will collaborate with each section within the state facilities and be required to use independent judgement, take initiative in carrying out duties and responsibilities and should be extraordinarily detail oriented.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Specimens are collected, labeled, processed, stored, and shipped in accordance with the specifications of reference laboratories and standards for infection control. equipment and work areas are cleaned and maintained with established standards for infection control. All laboratory requests are processed with accuracy. Results of testing are accurately recorded and promptly distributed to the requesting physician/clinician.

  • Supplies and inventory are ordered, stocked and maintained in order to provide continuous support for laboratory activities.

  • Admission lab work will be collected on admission as resident status allows or within seven days of admission. Specimen collections requiring special considerations (fasting specimens, drug levels, etc.) will be done in accordance with the specifications of reference laboratories and institutional protocols to assure accuracy. Labs will be transported to Northeast Florida State Hospital per protocols.

  • Keeps supervisor fully informed of activities, pertinent issues and potential problems that may arise in his or her role as laboratory technician. Participates in pertinent clinic meetings and in other committees or project teams as indicated. Effectively shares pertinent information with peers, multidisciplinary staff and administration.

  • Performs routine EKGs as requested by medical services in a timely manner. Runs new lab results daily and processes according to protocols.

  • Coverage responsibilities in clinic for the clinic assistant/clinic front desk and as assistant for the primary care physician as needed.

  • Recognizes that the role of the Lab Technician II is essential to the delivery of quality health care services to the residents of NFETC and makes every effort to treat all residents with respect and insures they are afforded dignity while in the clinic area.

  • Observes established work hours. Obtains permission before being off work. Schedules leave in a manner that minimizes work disruption. Completes work on time and demonstrates a willingness and ability to adapt to changes in work assignments and procedures.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required for the position:

  • Knowledge of the basic concepts and principles of the physical or natural sciences.

  • Knowledge of the procedures, equipment and material used in laboratory testing and analysis.

  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic.

  • Skill in the use of laboratory equipment and materials.

  • Ability to collect, record and analyze laboratory data.

  • Ability to understand and follow technical instructions relating to laboratory testing and analysis.

  • Ability to perform laboratory tests and analyses.

  • Ability to communicate effectively.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.

  • Ability to prepare and maintain laboratory documentation data.

  • Ability to perform basic arithmetical calculations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or its equivalent and two years of experience in laboratory work.

  • College education from an accredited institution or vocational/technical training can substitute at the rate of 30 semester, 45 quarter or 720 classroom hours for each year of the required experience provided such education includes three courses in the physical and/or natural sciences.
