The compensation for this appointment will range from $18.00 - $23.00 hourly and reflects what California Baptist University reasonably expects to pay for this staff appointment. Actual compensation may vary based on the qualifications and experience of the applicant, as well as market conditions.

Position Summary Information

Summary

Indirectly supports the instruction in all laboratory-based science courses - including but not limited to biology, chemistry, physics, and geosciences-related subjects by performing the following duties. This is a 20 hour/10 month position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Other duties may be assigned.

  • Prepare and set out materials, which include chemical solutions, biological specimens, etc., to be used in laboratory teaching sessions and lecture demonstrations.

  • Set up equipment (microscopes, computer-interfaced physics experiments, chemistry equipment, instrumentation, etc.) as needed for laboratory teaching sessions.

  • Maintain and provide care for animals, plants, and cultures for use in laboratories.

  • Organize and maintain an inventory of chemicals, equipment, biological specimens, and materials.

  • Assist in training lab instructors, TAs, and student workers in laboratory safety.

  • Receive laboratory-related materials from the Post, check shipments and packing slips, and place received materials into the department inventory.

  • Participate in proper collection and storage of chemical and biological waste.

  • Perform minor maintenance, calibration, and repairs on equipment and instrumentation and coordinate outside vendors to perform major maintenance, calibration, and repairs.

  • Maintain laboratories, stockrooms, prep rooms, and other science-related areas in a clean, safe, secure, and organized manner.

  • Operate laboratory instruments, equipment, autoclaves, and computers.

  • Work with the Laboratory Coordinator to inform and direct the facilities department to any laboratory maintenance that needs to be done.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position could be responsible for assigning work and/or giving direction to part-time Student Workers, in order to complete work assignments.

  • Ability to calculate concentrations and accurately prepare chemical solutions.

  • Knowledge of safety precautions for handling chemicals and biological materials.

  • Skill in providing guidance and instruction in laboratory protocols and in the safe use of laboratory equipment.

  • Knowledge of experimental procedures, protocols, and preparation techniques.

  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards. Ability to set up, calibrate, operate, and maintain standard laboratory and test equipment.

  • Knowledge of the cleaning specifications of various laboratory and/or medical equipment, fixtures, utensils, and related materials.

  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.

  • Ability to plan, develop, and coordinate multiple projects.

  • Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the position's duties.

  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.

  • Ability to supervise and train student staff, including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.

  • Strong organizational skills and detail oriented.

  • Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials.

  • Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures.

  • Knowledge of standard budgeting and expenditure control procedures and documentation.

  • Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures.

  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments.

  • Ability to investigate and analyze information and draw conclusions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here represent those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and sit; and requires sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate a computer keyboard or other office equipment. Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers and speaking and hearing ability sufficient to communicate in person or over the phone. Moderate physical activity, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds or stand and/or walk for more than four (4) hours per day. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here represent those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.

Education and/or Experience

Bachelors degree from an accredited four-year college or university; or one to two years' related experience and/or training with experience in Chemistry, Biology, and Physics laboratories; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have a minimum of twenty (20) semester hours of college level physical and/or life science units including five (5) units of related laboratory classes.
