The Position

Laboratory Technicians perform standardized technical laboratory procedures requiring knowledge in the life and physical sciences.

Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.

The Nevada Department of Corrections is seeking a full-time Laboratory Technician 1 (Phlebotomist). This position is located in the Medical Division at High Desert State Prison (HDSP) in Indian Springs, NV. Incumbent must have experience in phlebotomy, be familiar with medical laboratory tests and with methods of collecting and processing samples and specimens for medical laboratory testing.

Experience working in a Correctional or institutional environment is preferred but not required. Duties will primarily include accessioning Lab Corp orders in computer, blood draws, sending out specimens to Lab Corp, ordering supplies and other duties as needed. * THIS RECRUITMENT MAY CLOSE AT ANY TIME BASED ON THE AMOUNT OF APPLICATIONS RECEIVED. To Qualify:

In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:

Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of laboratory experience performing various laboratory procedures; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Requirements A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.

A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Additional Position Criteria Experience in phlebotomy is required.

Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation. The position supports Stein Hospital. This hospital, which serves Southern Nevada, is a secure forensic facility providing inpatient forensic services for persons who are court committed. The Forensic Specialist 1 position is the entry level in the Forensic Specialist series, and progression to Forensic Specialist 2 and 3 will automatically occur with the recommendation of the appointing authority when minimum qualifications are met and incumbent is performing satisfactorily. Forensic Specialists at Stein Hospital perform security duties, but also play a vital role in supporting the therapeutic treatment and educational training for clients to evaluate and attain competency for criminal charges.
