The Laboratory Technician 1, 2 or 3 is a full-time position within the Pathology Department. The incumbent will perform a wide variety of advanced level clinical diagnostic without direct supervision.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Two years of experience as a laboratory assistant, laboratory technical assistant, laboratory technician or blood bank phlebotomist.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
Completion of a twelve month training program in histological techniques under the supervision of a qualified pathologist will substitute for all of the required experience.
Satisfactory completion of a one year program in medical laboratory technology at an accredited vocational-technical school will substitute for all of the required experience.
College training will substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience provided that six semester hours of each thirty are in any one or a combination of these specialized fields: laboratory animal technology, laboratory animal science, animal science, biology, microbiology, chemistry, nursing, zoology, agricultural sciences, physics, bacteriology, histological techniques, medical technology, immunology, urology or renewable resources.
An associate degree in medical technology or nursing will substitute for all of the required experience.
A baccalaureate degree with twenty-four semester hours in bacteriology, biology, histological techniques, medical technology, immunology, urology, zoology, chemistry, histopathology, mycology, or microbiology or any combination of the above coursework will substitute for all of the required experience.
Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science will substitute for all of the required experience.

Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
For positions in Human Testing Laboratory:
Licensed to practice as either a Laboratory Assistant or a Clinical Laboratory Technician in the State of Louisiana as required by Louisiana Clinical Laboratory Personnel Law R.S. 37:1311-1329 and the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from Laboratory Technician 2 and Laboratory Technical Assistants by the preparation of laboratory specimens to be evaluated by higher level laboratory personnel.
EXAMPLES BELOW ARE A BRIEF SAMPLE OF COMMON DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS JOB TITLE. NOT ALL POSSIBLE TASKS ARE INCLUDED.
Performs veni-puncture in keeping with standard protocol on patients to obtain blood for requested analysis.
Interviews, screens, and performs sterile veni-puncture in keeping with standard protocol to obtain 500 ML whole blood for use in the blood bank.
Prepares laboratory specimens such as blood, urine, stool, and sputum for diagnostic evaluation.
Prepares feces and other materials for examination for the presence of ova and parasites.
Prepares, embeds, cuts, stains, mounts, labels, and catalogues tissue sections.
Prepares, stains cover slips, and catalogues cytology specimens.
Prepares reagents, soils, and plant and animal tissues for analysis to identify pH, lime, organic matter, minor elements, soluble salts, etc.
Operates pH meters, salt bridges, balances and colorimeters, calibrating as necessary.
Performs microscopic examination, records, and reports test results.
