The purpose of this position is to provide technical support and high quality patient care testing services that support the overall patient care activities of OHSU Hospitals and Clinics and the Department of Pathology. The person in this position is authorized to perform testing in the following areas: bone marrow assists and slide staining, moderately complex testing. Specimen processing, and result reporting is performed independently, after appropriate training. Supervisor or director review of results is required in situations dictated by policy or procedures. The person filling this position will be of professional demeanor and perform their duties with an attitude which will best serve the clients of the department.
Function/Duties of Position
Bone Marrow Bench Duties:
Schedules appointments for bone marrow assists.
Performs bone marrow assistance at the bedside for physicians performing bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, according to written procedures.
Observes the aspiration, determines if the specimen is adequate, prepares slides, prepares or preserves specimen for additional testing as needed.
Stains slides using both manual and automated methods and prepares specimen, slides, and paperwork for pathologist's review.
Prepares reagents, performs quality control checks, and troubleshoots procedures as needed.
Checks all slides for adequate staining and appropriate morphology
Laboratory Testing Duties:
Sets up worksheet and gathers history.
Obtains peripheral blood samples from hematology.
Performs moderately complex testing if needed.
Collates flow work to go to hematopathologists (billing, slide staining, cover slipping, and copies of worksheets and 1 histogram).
Performs data entry and sample processing for samples received for testing:
Checks accuracy of specimens, requisitions, labels
Performs computer entry in EPIC, test request, and billing functions
Accurately labels samples, requisitions, and appropriate specimen containers
Ensures that all samples are logged in to the lab and triaged in a timely manner
Directs samples to technologists and testing areas, or stores samples for future testing.
Notifies technologists or appropriate lab when priority work is received
Materials Preparation:
Prepares reagents, stains and fixatives following written procedures
Send out media (RPMI + 10% FCS)
Maintains equipment according to written schedules and procedures.
Restocks, orders, and checks-in supplies
Other duties:
Prioritizes work according to established procedures
Picks up specimens from various parts of the hospital as required
Maintains inventory of supplies, orders, picks up, and stores supplies according to established procedures
Trains new employees, students, and other personnel in job duties
Attends staff meetings, provides input, and fully participates in planning and feedback in work group
Follows all safety procedures when carrying out duties
Performs duties as assigned by supervisor for special studies and projects
Performs cleaning and maintenance staining equipment
Performs requirements for Staff Members as outlined in Compliance Roles and Responsibilities in OHSU Hospitals and Clinics.
Answers multi-line telephone and perform client services duties
Provides a pleasant and professional telephone manner as frontline representative of the laboratory
Assists needs of callers in all aspects of laboratory operations
Performs other duties such as: phoning results, generating and faxing reports and reporting results for interpretive tests.
Provides excellent customer service
Required Qualifications
A Certificate or Associate Degree from an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician training program; OR
Completion of a certified Laboratory Assistant training program which includes 45 credit hours in chemical or biological science plus one year experience in a clinical laboratory; OR
Forty-five credit hours of college level chemical or biological courses and two years of experience as a Laboratory Assistant in a clinical laboratory
Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

Pay Range: $23.88 - $32.30 per hour
This position will be working with human tissues and body fluids; possible exposure to carcinogens, toxins and/or biohazards typically found in a clinical laboratory setting; wearing gloves and other personal protective equipment for long periods; experiencing occasional temperature control problems in building.
Position's in laboratory departments require the ability to carry and lift up to 30 lbs.; ability to stand or sit for 4-8 hours depending on the tasks assigned; ability to bend, reach, and carry as required for assigned tasks; ability to utilize simple and complicated laboratory equipment and computers; ability to utilize multi-line phones, pagers, and office equipment.
