Position Summary

Laboratory Technician 1: This is the entry-level work involving the proper receiving, storage, security and disposition of evidence submitted to the laboratory. Strict documentation of the evidence chain of custody is an integral part of this position. In addition, maintain compliance with ANAB and Crime Laboratory Policies and Procedures for requirements of Accreditation of Forensic Science Testing Laboratories. This position works closely with law enforcement personnel, District Attorneys and their office personnel, and Crime Laboratory analysts. This position may have the opportunity to assist other units within the Wausau Crime Laboratory. All of these duties are accomplished under close, progressing to limited supervision.

Laboratory Technician 2: This is the senior level for work involving the proper receiving, storage, security and disposition of evidence submitted to the laboratory. This position typically handles more complex, non-routine forensic evidence and related materials. Strict documentation of the evidence chain of custody is an integral part of this position. In addition, maintain compliance with ANAB and Crime Laboratory Policies and Procedures for requirements of Accreditation of Forensic Science Testing Laboratories. This position works closely with law enforcement personnel, District Attorneys and their office personnel, and Crime Laboratory analysts. This position may have the opportunity to assist other units within the Wausau Crime Laboratory. This position will assist with training of Laboratory Technicians. These duties are accomplished independently under general supervision.

Salary Information

The Laboratory Technician 1 position is in pay schedule 06 and pay range 12. The starting pay will $21.55/hr.; The Laboratory Technician 2 position is in pay schedule 06 and pay range 13 and the starting pay will $23.32/hr. Candidate placement will be determined based on qualifications at time of hire. Pay for current or former state employees will follow the provisions found in the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan. A 12-month probationary period may be required.

Job Details

The Department of Justice does not sponsor work visas at the time of hire or anytime during employment. All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and complete the required Employment Eligibility Form I-9.

Qualifications

Minimally qualified candidates must have the following training, education and/or experience:

  • Using Microsoft Suite products, or similar software, on a daily basis to:

  • Create and/or maintain spreadsheets and databases

  • Create, edit, and proofread documents

  • Utilizing Outlook e-mail and calendaring functions

  • Providing customer service and/or resolving client inquiries and questions

  • Applying quality control principles and techniques or following strict adherence to standardized procedures.

In addition to the qualifications listed above, a well-qualified applicant will also have a combination of training, education, and/or experience in:

  • Proper evidence packaging and storage

  • Providing administrative support (scheduling meetings, responding to general inquiries, answer and routing phone calls)

  • Entering large quantities of data with accuracy

  • Applying quality control and standardized procedures in a laboratory or law enforcement setting.
