POSITION PURPOSE

Performs phlebotomy on both outpatient and inpatients. Performs specimen processing, computer order entry and other pre-analytic functions, as required.

Obtains accurate patient demographic and financial information from patients or patient advocate. May registers outpatients in the hospital electronic medical record system (EPIC) and determines preliminary patient or insurance payment obligation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs successful sample collection on outpatient and inpatients to include venipuncture blood draw, capillary puncture, infant heel sticks, and urine collection utilizing proper patient identification and customer service skills. Troubleshoots problems related to missing specimens, discrepancies between specimens and orders.

Obtains patient demographic and insurance information from a patient or patient advocate. Performs data entry through the electronic medical record system which may include insurance verification, issuing Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN) and utilize automated systems to obtain and process insurance information.

Acts as a representative of the department, communicating with patients and physician offices. Responds to inquiries in a courteous and helpful manner following departmental policies and procedures.

Uses good judgment to decide when to contact a Medical Laboratory Scientist, Manager, or a Pathologist, as necessary.

Knowledge of reference sources for patient preparation and specimen collection and handling requirements to be able to assist other health care professionals. Able to access on-line websites for assistance, when needed.

May utilize a glucometer or perform waived urine testing prior to administration of glucola.

Must be able to work with minimal supervision. May be requested to travel to other phlebotomy service centers (PSC).

Completes specimen handling and processing including centrifugation of vacutainer and aliquoting/pouring over of specimens. Aliquots and adjusts pH of 24-hour urine specimens as required by location.

Maintains minimum supply levels and maintains cleanliness of workstation and of the section. Provides input on policies and procedures. Assists in training new employees and students.

Reviews and completes assigned continuing education documents. This includes annual mandatory education and laboratory procedures review and acknowledgment.

Performs and documents routine quality control of equipment (centrifuge, refrigerator temperatures) as required by location.

Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution.

Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, associates, and visitors to Trinity Health. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places. Adheres to all hospital HIPAA and privacy policies.

Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent required. Previous phlebotomy experience preferred or related experience. Completion of phlebotomy, medical assistant or patient care technician training preferred.

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with patients and other health care professionals.

Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when performing job responsibilities.

Ability to work and stand for approximately 60% of work time.

Organizational skills necessary to prioritize work. Flexibility to accommodate task and location reassignment as needed.

Familiarity and comfort with using computers.
