Monitor quality control, quality assurance and regulatory compliance. Participates in and facilitates the management of the operational, personnel and financial activities of the department. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.

Qualifications:

  • B.S. Degree required, preferably in Medical Laboratory Science or a related field. * Master's or equivalent preferred. * Three to five years laboratory experience required, which includes one year in some type of supervisory/management role. * Experience in an acute care hospital or health care facility preferred. * Excellent knowledge and skills in laboratory operations. * Able to set priorities and work under stress. * Must be able to remain calm and tactful when resolving problems involving all levels of staff, patients, visitors, vendors etc. * Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills. * Flexible and adaptable to changing conditions.* ASCP, NCA, AMT or ABHI certification required. DEPARTMENT INFORMATION Job Description Summary: GW's Research Pathology Core Laboratory is a research core facility developed in support of the Institute for Biomedical Sciences and housed in the Department of Pathology of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS). The mission of the Pathology Core Laboratory is to support graduate students and research investigators in the Institute of Biomedical Sciences and in the greater GW research community by providing quality histological tissue preparation in a timely and cost-efficient manner; assisting investigators and graduate students in developing new histological approaches that can further their research productivity; and serving as a center of expertise for research staff and graduate students in demonstration of histological methods and/or interpretation of pathology. The Pathology Department is seeking a Laboratory Associate to work with the Research Pathology Core Laboratory to be responsible for developing standard lab processes, routine maintenance and operations in the laboratory. This position typically monitors compliance within a lab with university safety standards and practices along with OSHA, CFR, and other federal, state, and local requirements. This position documents emergency responses if necessary and ensures compliance with nationally accepted standards for cleanroom operations and cleanroom best practices. This role provides user support on equipment and technical details when necessary. This role supervises students and trainees who come to the lab to develop skills in histologic research. The position may perform data and image analysis, compile results, and prepare technical reports and documentation of outcomes. Responsibilities Include: * Maintains and supervises general working order of standard instruments used in the lab including: refrigerators and freezers, microscopes, scales, ovens, microtomes, tissue processor, cytostats, chemical hood, laminar flow hood and incubator. * Responsible for accessioning tissue specimens; labeling samples and tissue sections; routine tissue processing; tissue embedding; microtome and cytostat sections; labeling samples/slides; routine stains; special stains; and immunostains with appropriate controls. * Establishes standard operating procedures (SOP) for tissue processing and solution preparation, maintains logs of this activity. * Keeps daily logs with inventory of specimens and blocks in process or in file. * Works with researchers in several labs, maintains inventory from several sources, keeps track of flow of specimens and charges. * Troubleshoots problems that may arise. * Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position. Minimum Qualifications: Qualified candidates will hold a BA/BS in a related discipline, plus 2 years of relevant professional experience or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications: * Degree in clinical science with course(s) in Histology preferred. * Eligibility or certification as a Histotechnologist or Histotechnicican by the American Society for Clinical Pathologists. * Experience in working as a histotechnologist, in a research laboratory setting, and as a manager of lab operations. * Experience in using computers for communications. * Ability to work independently in maintenance of data logs, preparation of invoices, use of spreadsheets (data entry and routine analytics) * Negotiating skills.
