Position Summary:

Conducts and interprets a variety of laboratory tests for quantitative and qualitative analysis of production glasses, raw materials, using such laboratory equipment as X-ray spectrometer, ph meter, expansion and softening apparatus, grinding and polishing equipment and colorimeter. Compares results to existing specification to identify out of control values and presents results in report form. Make batch changes per S.P.C. guidelines. Supports the plant environmental goals by having the role of the Radiation Safety Officer and maintaining the opacity monitoring software system.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Conducts and interprets several laboratory tests for chemical and physical analysis of production glasses using such equipment as grinding and polishing sheets, X-ray spectrometer, ph meter, analytical balance, softening and expansion apparatus, and coloring spectrophotometer.

• Collects and prepares all samples for the various laboratory tests described above.

• Compares results of all testing to existing specifications to identify our control values and presents results in report form.

• Analytical problem solving skills required.

• Responsible for training of back up technician or part-time technicians as needed.

• Logs test results in logbooks, calculates accurate results, prepares and utilizes calibration curve.

• Responsible for routine cross check analysis with Corning, NY labs.

• Has responsibility for maintaining inventories of spare parts and lab supplies.

• Performs preventive and routine maintenance on laboratory equipment.

• Performs seed counts

• Receives COA's on raw materials for approval to mix house. Also, COA Data History.

• Make the batch changes by applying SPC WECO rules to initiate.

• Maintain records based on ISO 9001.

• Operate and maintain OPACITY Monitoring System (DAHS) for furnaces. Retrieving data and creating quarterly reports for State and plant requirements.

• Perform duties of Radiation Safety Officer including performing leak tests, report to NRC on a bi-annual basis, Maintain records for x-ray fluorence unit, develop and maintain Radiation Safety Program, designated radiation source owner for level device source which entails securing and being required to be present when radiation source is removed and/or installed.

Key Decision Areas:

• Introduce new equipment or new software into day-to-day operations.

• Provide data spreadsheets and charts for efficient interpretation of lab results.

• Provide key input into the batch change process for specific experiment plans.

• As required operates the Thermo Cam Unit for projects and analysis.

Required Qualifications:

• Minimum Associate's Degree in Laboratory Technician or other technically related degree or equivalent work experience

• 1-3 years experience working in lab with glass and or ceramic products

• Proficient in operating X-Ray spectrometer, Opacity monitoring and other lab equipment

• Understanding of manufacturing methods

• Basic understanding of DOE a plus

• Proficient in Microsoft Products
