The Zhenqi Liu lab in the Division of Endocrinology at the University of Virginia's School of Medicine seeks candidates for a Laboratory and Research Technician 2, Lab Specialist, Lab Specialist Intermediate, or Lab Specialist Senior. The Liu lab focuses on studying insulin action and energy metabolism in various research models, including cultured cells, rodent models, and human subjects.

The primary responsibilities include overseeing the daily operation of the laboratory under the supervision of Dr. Liu and/or senior staff.

Duties will entail performing laboratory tasks such as cell isolation, Western blotting, tissue and cell culture, cloning, and PCR, and assisting lab personnel with routine experiments. Incumbent will also be responsible for ordering supplies for the lab.

The successful candidate will:

  • Setting up and performing experiments of a repetitive nature and preparing culture media, chemicals, reagents, and solutions as instructed.

  • Perform cell isolation/culture and molecular biology experiments and analysis.

  • Participate in research involving experiments with animals to include care and feeding, in vivo and ex vivo experiments, and observation during post-operative or treatment periods.

  • Operate, adjust, and maintain specific scientific apparatuses and instruments.

  • Order lab supplies and maintain inventory as well as ensuring all receipts are uploaded and attached in Workday upon receipt.

  • Record accurate information and logs of experimental data.

  • Keep informed of new lab techniques.

  • Provide routine, technical, and administrative support to research projects.

  • Maintain laboratory regulatory compliance

  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

Laboratory and Research Technician 2

Education: Associate's degree

Experience: At least two years of lab experience, which may include student experience. A bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in place of experience.

Licensure: None.

Lab Specialist:

Education: Bachelor's degree.

Experience: 3 years of experience. 6 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.

Licensure: None.

Lab Specialist Intermediate:

Education: Bachelor's degree.

Experience: 6 years of experience in a lab technician role. Master's degree may substitute for required experience. 9 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.

Licensure: None.

Lab Specialist Senior

Education: Bachelor's degree.

Experience: 9 years of experience in a lab technician role. May substitute with Master's or Terminal degree plus 4 years of experience in a lab technician role and supervisory experience. 12 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.

Licensure: None.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position can involve extensive periods of standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. It also requires keyboarding, other bench work, and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.

This position will remain open until filled. This position is restricted and dependent upon project needs, funding availability, and performance. The University will perform background checks on applicant.
