Description:

POSITION PURPOSE

This position is responsible for coordinating the efficient operation of specimen reception, clinical laboratory specimen registration, order entry and the pre-analytical preparation necessary for analysis of Inpatient, Outreach, and reference lab specimens. The coordinator will participate in quality monitoring, ensuring the workflow processes are efficient and designed in a manner to meet quality objectives and that are consistent with excellent customer service. The Coordinator will assist managers in ensuring that the Lab assistants are properly trained and competent and assigned duties effectively to support the laboratory.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Specimen Processing Oversight and Performance

1.Technical resource for staff answering any questions to assist in processes and procedures.

2.Plans, executes, and coordinates the colleague work schedule to ensure adequate coverage is met within staffing guidelines.

3.Prioritizes, organizes, and distributes the daily work assignments to staff so that all tasks are covered, taking into account call-ins, daily staff levels and specimen arrival times which are subject to change.

4.Monitors staff to ensure that assignments are followed. Modifies staff assignments within or across shifts as needed to assure workload is completed.

5.Work with the technical managers to ensure that lab services and quality metrics are met.

6.Recommends and participates in the hiring process, training process (initial and ongoing) performance evaluations and disciplinary actions.

7.Provides guidance, expertise and positive mentoring to staff.

8.Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution.

9.Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, associates, and visitors. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private locations.

10.Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.

Ensures staff is using positive ID matching specimens against requisitions and labels specimens with appropriate patient and specimen identifiers.

Documents and follows up on problems. Able to access reference materials and on-line manuals.

Knows when and where to look for specimens and how and when to add tests to previously collected specimens. Ensures team retrieves results from laboratory computer and reports via telephone when appropriate. Maintains minimum supply levels.

Ensures cleanliness of workstation and of section is maintained. Troubleshoots label and paper printers. Assures training of new employees and students.

Reviews and completes assigned continuing education documents. This includes annual mandatory education and laboratory procedures review and acknowledgment. Performs and documents routine quality control of equipment (centrifuge, refrigerator temperatures). Distributes samples to appropriate testing area.

Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution.

Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of Trinity Health. Files tickets with resolution center to communicate computer, software, or hardware issues.

OTHER FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs other duties as assigned by management to include development of training documents and department written procedures.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE

Education:

  • Associates degree in medical technology or related health care degree preferred or equivalent work experience.

Experience:

Two years of laboratory experience with specimen processing

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

2.Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with colleagues (phlebotomist, nursing, physicians) along with patients.

Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when performing job responsibilities. Ability to work and stand for approximately 60% of work time.

Organizational skills necessary to prioritize work. Familiarity and comfort with using computers.
