The Prime Discoveries R&D laboratory is located in Biolabs at CIC in Philadelphia. BioLabs is a membership-based network of shared lab and office facilities located in key biotech innovation clusters and the nucleus for innovation in Greater Philadelphia.

Job Description Summary

The Laboratory scientist will conduct experimental research involving aspects of research and development using various molecular biology techniques. Duties include management of the laboratory, which involves ordering supplies, keeping inventories for various experimental reagents, and maintenance of laboratory equipment.

Job Description

A laboratory scientist position is immediately available in the R&D laboratory of Prime Discoveries located in Philadelphia. The ideal candidate will work on research and development of novel rapid panels including technologies such as RT-LAMP, RT-PCR and NGS for COVID-19, respiratory conditions, and other infectious diseases.

The job duties include:

  • Performing PCR, Real Time PCR, including primer and probe design
  • Preparing samples for Next Generation Sequencing pipelines using the Illumina Platform (RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis, DNA quantification, etc.)
  • Preparing and pipetting small volume solutions
  • Preparing and receiving shipments between partner laboratories and customers
  • Development and performing assays to support pipeline testing
  • Maintaining records and test results following good manufacturing practices (GMP)
  • Document work clearly and perform tests accurately
  • Perform tasks in a repeatable and efficient manner
  • Communicate effectively with team members and client staff
  • Order and maintain laboratory space, inventory, and supplies

Requirements

The ideal candidate would possess:

  • At least 4-years experience including molecular biology techniques and small volume pipetting
  • Sound knowledge of molecular biology and aseptic techniques
  • Computer, scientific, and organizational skills
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written)
  • Prior experience designing Primers and Probes for PCR assays
  • Prior experience working with DNA/RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis, DNA quantification etc
  • Previous experience working with RT-PCR instruments including QuantStudio or similar platforms, PCR thermal cyclers, and/or plate readers for DNA/RNA amplification and detection
  • Previous experience with sample preparation for the Illumina sequencing platform is preferred (training will be provided).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, self-motivation, adaptability, with strong work ethics and a positive attitude
  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, keep accurate records, follow instructions, and comply with company policies

Basic Minimum Qualifications :

  • Bachelor, Master Degree, or Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Biomedical Eng., or related science. Experience in lieu of qualification might be considered.
  • Authorization to work in the United States indefinitely without restriction or sponsorship
  • Position is full-time, Monday - Friday

The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) Core Lab is looking for a Medical Lab Scientist I to join the team. The successful candidate will have the following responsibilities. Performs waived, moderate, and/or high-complexity tests and procedures in clinical laboratory sections under the direction of the Supervisor. * Performs appropriately requested clinical laboratory analyses on all types of laboratory specimens, produces and documents accurate laboratory results for diagnosis and treatment of disease. * Applies knowledge and skills to perform accurately, all routine and complex laboratory procedures for which competency has been established, and authorization to perform testing has been granted. Follows all lab pre-analytical, analytical, and post analytical procedures covering specimen, analytical test system, and result reporting requirements. * Monitors performs, and documents all Quality Control, maintenance, and calibration procedures according to established protocols and accreditation agency standards. Identifies issues/factors that adversely affect test performance. Provides technical support to staff, physicians, and personnel to resolve any issues related to laboratory testing. * Starts up, shuts down, and performs maintenance of lab equipment and instruments. Takes appropriate corrective action according to established procedures, when test system performance deviates from acceptable level. Documents all corrective actions taken including calling technical support. Immediately notifies Supervisor and/or Director if unable to resolve test system issue. Ensures test results are not reported until all corrective action has been taken and test system is performing within specifications. * Participates in Proficiency Testing and ensures proficiency testing is performed in the same manner as patient specimens. Maintains compliance with Proficiency Testing policies. As directed by the Supervisor, maintains and updates laboratory policies, procedure manuals, and specified documents required for review by regulatory agencies. Ensures that all employees are kept up to date with these changes. * Assists the supervisor in specified activities that ensure laboratory compliance with all accreditation agencies. Compliance with Competency accreditation guidelines is a staff responsibility that must be completed annually. May function as the General Supervisor for selected duties when required. * Demonstrates initiative in continually improving personal knowledge, skills, and work experience; and in improving departmental functioning. * Works well with Supervisors and those in authority; works at establishing a good rapport and cooperative working relationship with all members of the laboratory; maintains a positive rapport with medical staff and hospital personnel. Responsible for maintaining adequate staffing on all shifts, weekends, and holidays. * As directed by the Supervisor coordinates the training of new employees and teaches students. Performs method validations, linearity, and parallel studies on all laboratory instruments as assigned. Investigates laboratory incident reports and documents the findings as per UPHS procedures. * Maintains a clean, orderly, and safe work area. Complies with Hospital, Laboratory, Safety, and HIPPA regulations; notifies Supervisor when hazards are found, completes mandatory in-services on, or before the due date. Maintains the inventory of supplies needed to keep the section in working order. Provides Supervisor with an adequate notification when supplies need to be replenished. Participates in PI activities including preparation of various CEQI reports for the area. Displays willingness to adapt to changing department demands.
