AB Biotek is seeking a Laboratory Manager/Principal Scientist to join our team in our new St Louis laboratory facility. This position involves managing day to day operations of the laboratory and will be a strong individual contributor who will be a key contributor to fermentation projects. The individual will also have a strong background in analytical chemistry with demonstrated ability to create, analyze, and recommend new analytical methods and techniques. The individual will also mentor more junior scientists. This position requires the ability to multitask and organize multiple simultaneous experiments. The preferred candidate will have extensive experience in designing and planning experiments, have an aptitude to execute experiments with accuracy, keep an organized scientific notebook, compile and evaluate the data critically, and present findings in a small group setting. The successful candidate is expected to be familiar support a team of scientists, their area of expertise.
The individual will support a team of scientists, providing day-to-day laboratory management, analytical chemistry and fermentation science support, and mentoring to develop research plans and reports with scientists in support of a variety of product development activities within the department.
Key Result Areas:
Manage time and resources of a 10-12 FTE biology/biotech laboratory
Familiarity with StageGate project management
Familiarity with LIMS systems and practices
Laboratory chemical hygiene and safety
Familiarity with analytical equipment and methods, particularly chromatography and spectroscopy)
Mentoring junior scientists
Specific Areas of Expertise
Familiarity with one or more of the following areas:
Analytical Chemistry (special emphasis in chromatography, mass spectrometry, NIR/MIR spectroscopy)
design new techniques and procedures
Maintaining stock chemical ingredients
Perform standard assays and quantifications in specific area of expertise
Setup, calibration, and troubleshooting of commonly used equipment
Other techniques as required by the field of expertise
Able to implement protocols from the literature or from other labs.
Demonstrates familiarity in specific area-relevant literature and current issues.
Ability to maintain and update laboratory research records as required.
Ability to create and update StageGate Charts, Project Charters, Experimental Plans, and any other allied documentation for all assigned projects.
Ability to create and update other documentation such as standard operating procedures and experimental protocols.
Assists in the preparation of technical reports.
Working knowledge of statistics and ability to use statistical software (SAS JMP preferred)
Independently performs statistical data analysis and interpretation.
Independently creates and implement experimental designs.
Performs the appropriate statistical tests required for the project.

A combination of the listed skills and knowledge is preferred
MS in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field and >12 years of laboratory experience.
PhD in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field and >10 years of laboratory experience.

The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
