School/College/Division Description

The Chemistry Department is large, complex, dynamic, and very productive with an annual budget of approximately $4.2 M including grants from the National Science Foundation, National Institute of Health, Department of Energy, etc. It consists of 18 faculty, 4 academic staff, 6 classified staff, 3 postdocs/research associates, approximately 60 graduate students and a varying number of undergraduate teaching assistants. The Chemistry & Biochemistry Department offers five undergraduate degrees, two M.S. degrees and a PhD with a significant international student population.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Department Administrator, the Laboratory Manager coordinates and oversees the daily operation of the teaching laboratories for the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. This position supervises the tasks of two laboratory technicians and works closely with the Course Instructors, the Department Administrator, the Department Chair, and the Department Safety Committee to ensure the safety of the labs, efficiency of lab operations, and effectiveness of lab instructional activities. This position is also directly responsible for technical lab support of the General Chemistry classes. The individual in this position also serves on the Chemistry and Biochemistry Safety Committee and Instrumentation Committee.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or related field from an accredited institution

  • Chemical laboratory experience in laboratory terminology, principles of laboratory instrument techniques and laboratory safety

  • Knowledge of general supervisory practices and techniques

  • Ability to lift packages up to forty (40) pounds

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of computer operations sufficient to operate chemical inventory software, access and download Safety Data Sheets, and communicate effectively through email.

  • Ability to independently prioritize work to meet deadlines while working in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills and ability to effectively communicate with faculty, staff, students, and the general public.

  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills, independent judgement and initiative, excellent writing skills, solid analytical skills, and proficient problem-solving ability with high attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of common software packages such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint.

  • College level courses in Physical, Analytical, and Organic Chemistry.
