Wilson College invites applications for a full-time, 12-month position for a Laboratory Manager. The primary responsibilities of the position fall into three general categories: 1) Laboratory Operation and Maintenance; 2) Laboratory Safety; and 3) Laboratory Support Facilities. The Laboratory Manager works most frequently with the faculty and work-study students in biology and chemistry, but also works with other science faculty and staff from other offices and departments.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Laboratory Operation and Maintenance

To ensure that all laboratories are fully functioning to fulfill the instructional mission of the College, the Laboratory Manager will:

  • work in close collaboration with the science faculty to ensure that all integrated science laboratories are neat, well-organized, fully stocked and operational, in accordance with established guidelines for the operation and maintenance of laboratories in an academic setting (teaching and research).
  • supervise and train work study students in biology, chemistry and health sciences, and work with them in the ongoing care and maintenance of the laboratories and in the weekly preparation of each laboratory course.
  • maintain a working inventory (database) of all chemicals, glassware, equipment and instrumentation, including an effective labeling, storage and organizational system (includes all cabinets, drawers, glassware, equipment and instrumentation), monitor the use of all consumables
  • order laboratory supplies for the integrated sciences programs in consultation with the Chair of the Division of Integrated Sciences. Conduct price comparisons. Follow up on shipments. This will help ensure the timely and cost effective purchase of all laboratory supplies.
  • serve as budget manager for the Division of Integrated Sciences in consultation with the Chair of the Division. Follow up on, process, and maintain records of invoices. Monitor program budgets. Coordinate ordering and payment for laboratory supplies and/or services purchased through or transferred to other departments.
  • assist designated faculty in the coordination of student research. Conduct lab check outs after completion of research to ensure that student research supplies are stored or disposed of appropriately and labs are maintained properly.
  • maintain a manual of standard operating procedures for the care and maintenance of the laboratory facilities and for the equipment and instrumentation housed in those facilities. The manual should be thorough, complete and easily accessible, and an electronic version should be available.
  • coordinate maintenance of equipment and instrumentation, as appropriate. This includes creating a schedule for routine maintenance and performance/use logbooks for instruments in the building as needed, coordinating preventative maintenance and repairs in consultation with the Division Chair, and assisting with the collection of bids for new equipment purchases.

Laboratory Safety

To ensure the safety of those who work and study in the Brooks Science Center and to meet governmental regulations, the Laboratory Manager will play a lead role in organizing and implementing safety standards. To that end, the Laboratory Manager will:

  • supervise work study students in health sciences, biology, and chemistry and work with them in the ongoing maintenance of laboratory safety compliance.
  • determine and enforce safety standards for work study students and research students.
  • work closely with all science faculty who use or supervise laboratories, and with the Environmental Health & Safety Technician, who oversees the collection and removal of hazardous waste to ensure that all science center laboratories operate in compliance with current laboratory safety guidelines and standards.
  • maintain up-to-date chemical storage areas, supervise the maintenance of an online inventory of chemicals that meets EPA requirements, and develop an efficient tracking system for chemicals in-use or in temporary storage. This work should be done in close collaboration with the Chemistry faculty.
  • maintain OSHA and AVMA compliant chemical labels in coordination with the Division of Veterinary Nursing. Implement OSHA compliant chemical labels in biology and chemistry laboratories, and oversee continued creation and use of chemical labels.
  • monitor the collection of laboratory waste from the biology and chemistry laboratories. Coordinate the timely removal of laboratory waste.
  • work with science departments which maintain program accreditation with specialized accrediting agencies, including the Division of Veterinary Nursing and the Division of Nursing and Health Sciences, to ensure the implementation of accreditation standards in the laboratories.
  • work with the science faculty, and student workers in biology, chemistry, and health sciences to maintain up-to-date Safety Data Sheets for all chemicals used in laboratories.

Laboratory Support Facilities

The Harry R. Brooks Complex for Science, Mathematics and Technology includes several significant laboratory support facilities, including a museum of natural history, a greenhouse, an aquatics facility, and a fully equipped animal care and housing facility. Although these facilities largely support research and teaching in biology, they are also important to several other disciplines including, environmental science, behavioral science, and geology. The museum, greenhouse and aquatics facility also provide educational opportunities that extend to individuals or groups outside of the Wilson community. The Laboratory Manager, working in collaboration with the faculty that routinely use these facilities, would be responsible for the oversight and general maintenance of the following facilities:

  • Museum of Natural History

  • supervise and train museum of natural history work study students and work with them in the ongoing care and maintenance of the facilities.

  • update and maintain a specimen inventory (electronic version).

  • coordinate the organization, use, storage and display of specimens. Organize any special displays and direct occasional group tours.

  • Greenhouse and Aquatics Facility

  • supervise and train greenhouse and aquatics work study students and work with them in the ongoing care and maintenance of the facilities.

  • coordinate use of the greenhouse for coursework

  • Monitor control systems

  • coordinate preventative maintenance and repairs as necessary

  • Animal Care and Housing Facility

  • work in collaboration with faculty and research students using the facility to ensure that the facility is clean, neat, proper records (documentation) are being kept, and that the animals are being housed and cared for properly.

  • work in collaboration with faculty to comply with United States Department of Agriculture standards and adhere to protocols approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee

  • Establish and administer an animal care check schedule to ensure proper animal care and facility maintenance

COMPETENCIES:

  • Experience with various computer applications, proficiency in Microsoft Office products expected

  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff.

  • Ability to exercise judgement and maintain confidentiality

  • Meticulous approach to tasks and keeping precise records

POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:

  • Full-time, 12-month position.

  • Variable hours dependent on needs of department

  • Some work during evenings and weekends may be required

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • B.S. or B.A. required, preferably in biology, chemistry, or natural science.

  • Five years related experience, including proven technical knowledge and laboratory experience.

An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
