Wilson College invites applications for a full-time, 12-month position for a Laboratory Manager. The primary responsibilities of the position fall into three general categories: 1) Laboratory Operation and Maintenance; 2) Laboratory Safety; and 3) Laboratory Support Facilities. The Laboratory Manager works most frequently with the faculty and work-study students in biology and chemistry, but also works with other science faculty and staff from other offices and departments.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Laboratory Operation and Maintenance
To ensure that all laboratories are fully functioning to fulfill the instructional mission of the College, the Laboratory Manager will:

To ensure the safety of those who work and study in the Brooks Science Center and to meet governmental regulations, the Laboratory Manager will play a lead role in organizing and implementing safety standards. To that end, the Laboratory Manager will:
Laboratory Support Facilities
The Harry R. Brooks Complex for Science, Mathematics and Technology includes several significant laboratory support facilities, including a museum of natural history, a greenhouse, an aquatics facility, and a fully equipped animal care and housing facility. Although these facilities largely support research and teaching in biology, they are also important to several other disciplines including, environmental science, behavioral science, and geology. The museum, greenhouse and aquatics facility also provide educational opportunities that extend to individuals or groups outside of the Wilson community. The Laboratory Manager, working in collaboration with the faculty that routinely use these facilities, would be responsible for the oversight and general maintenance of the following facilities:
Museum of Natural History
supervise and train museum of natural history work study students and work with them in the ongoing care and maintenance of the facilities.
update and maintain a specimen inventory (electronic version).
coordinate the organization, use, storage and display of specimens. Organize any special displays and direct occasional group tours.
Greenhouse and Aquatics Facility
supervise and train greenhouse and aquatics work study students and work with them in the ongoing care and maintenance of the facilities.
coordinate use of the greenhouse for coursework
Monitor control systems
coordinate preventative maintenance and repairs as necessary
Animal Care and Housing Facility
work in collaboration with faculty and research students using the facility to ensure that the facility is clean, neat, proper records (documentation) are being kept, and that the animals are being housed and cared for properly.
work in collaboration with faculty to comply with United States Department of Agriculture standards and adhere to protocols approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee
Establish and administer an animal care check schedule to ensure proper animal care and facility maintenance
COMPETENCIES:
Experience with various computer applications, proficiency in Microsoft Office products expected
Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff.
Ability to exercise judgement and maintain confidentiality
Meticulous approach to tasks and keeping precise records
POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:
Full-time, 12-month position.
Variable hours dependent on needs of department
Some work during evenings and weekends may be required
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
B.S. or B.A. required, preferably in biology, chemistry, or natural science.
Five years related experience, including proven technical knowledge and laboratory experience.
An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
