Job Description:

The Laboratory Coordinator provides support for undergraduate teaching laboratories and the daily operations of the department.


Responsibilities of the Laboratory Coordinator include but are not limited to:

  • Overseeing the ordering, reception, and stocking of materials and supplies for the department

  • Maintaining digital inventory of all materials and equipment and reporting to faculty on inventory stocks

  • Reconciling procurement card charges

  • Keeping accurate digital budget records of all department purchases and generating monthly statements for review

  • Managing the hiring, training and time card submissions for work study students

  • Maintaining all regulatory and compliance documentation, including up-to date OSHA, EPA and IACUC certification

  • Managing equipment usage, maintenance, certification and repair

  • Coordinating laboratory safety training and biosafety training for students, faculty and staff and maintaining training records

  • Caring for live organisms needed for classroom teaching, which requires specific knowledge of plants, vertebrates, invertebrates, bacterial and viral cultures

  • Maintaining cleanliness of teaching laboratories

  • Processing teaching laboratory samples

  • Working with faculty on the planning and implementation of laboratory protocols

  • Participating in routine staff meetings and occasional departmental meetings

  • Liaising with other departments as appropriate

  • Report to Chair of the Biology and Biomedical Sciences Department

  • Supervise work-study students


  • Other duties as assigned by the Chair of the Biology Departments.


  • The incumbent is exposed to chemicals on a regular basis. The potential exists where hazardous conditions (chemical or biological) may be encountered. Use of personal protective equipment is required. The Laboratory Coordinator must be especially aware of any impact on safety.


A Bachelor's Degree in biology or a related field is required, as well as experience working in a laboratory environment with hazardous materials (chemical and biological). The candidate should have strong leadership skills and be able to foster a safe and efficient laboratory work environment. The candidate should be able to work autonomously but be willing to accept direction and constructive feedback. Strong verbal and written communication, interpersonal, time management, and organizational skills are required. Experience with budgets and financial systems is required, as is proficiency in MS Office. The candidate must have some flexibility in his/her schedule to meet the needs of morning, afternoon and evening laboratory sections. Recent working knowledge and experience with OSHA certification requirements for materials handling and regulations is preferred. The candidate must be committed to working with a diverse community of students, faculty and staff.

Environmental and Physical Demands: Lift and carry up to 35 lbs and push/pull up to 100 lbs. Standing, sitting, and walking for long periods of time, kneeling, reaching and bending. Repetitive motions including hands, wrists, and fingers. Hazardous materials - safely working with chemicals and biological samples using personal protective equipment

Excellent organizational, oral and written communication skills required. Must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently. Supervisory skills required. Computer knowledge required with spreadsheet capabilities in Excel and Word.

Correctly labels all specimens. LIS Computer Skills: Demonstrates ability to enter/edit patient requisitions. Demonstrates ability to enter/edit patient test orders. Demonstrates capabilities to enter/edit patient test results on manual or non-interfaced procedures. Documents edited report changes appropriately. Operates current I.S. system. Hematology - performs the following: Blood counts. - operates analyzer appropriately. Cell morphology. Cell differntiation. Sedimentation rates. Reticulocyte counts. Clotting studies. Blood Bank/Immunology - performs the following: Assists in the preparation of fresh frozen plasma platelets cryoprecipitate and dispenses for transfusion. Blood group and Rh type. Antibody screen. Identifies antibodies if present. Determines Rh immune globulin eligibility - pre and post partum. Infant cord blood tests. Verifies blood type of blood units received from RIBC. Processes compatability testing between patient and donor. Selects appropriate donor units. Performs serologic testing for infectious diseases. Performs quality control procedures.
