Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads - both students and employers - for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019-20. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC. This part-time position will assist in the Workforce Solutions Skilled Trades Academy. Laboratory Assistants will provide support to the Skilled Trades Academy Program Coordinator as well as to skilled trades faculty. This position will assist instructors with maintaining equipment, lab preparation, safety compliance and equipment inventory.
Functional Responsibilities:
Provide guidance/assistance to Instructors in locating and setting up course materials for trades training programs including, but not limited to, building and construction, maritime, industrial and manufacturing trades
Prepare/Cut welding materials to ensure set up for weekly laboratory exercises and prepare the laboratory for the next week's exercises
Develop program inventory system and conduct monthly inventory updates.
Implement inventory system and educate instructors on process and requirements
Coordinate with instructors to locate, acquire and prepare supplies and materials prior to each class.
Coordinate with instructors and purchasing staff to replenish supplies in a timely manner
Conduct routine equipment maintenance checks
Evaluate tool and equipment conditions and make recommendations for repairs, upgrades and purchases.
Conduct minor repair of tools and equipment as appropriate.
Supervise and/or conduct preventative maintenance of equipment according to manufacturers' recommendations. Monitor scheduled maintenance to ensure that equipment is operational.
Work with manufacturers or vendors to correct equipment deficiencies and maintain systems in order to minimize down time.
Maintain cleanliness and organization in the Skilled Trades Academy and training spaces
Perform other related work activities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Experience in industrial, construction or maritime trades
Ability to multitask
Knowledge of materials & equipment used in industrial, construction and maritime trades
Ability to operate band saw, forklift, welding machines
Good communication skills to include ability to follow written and verbal directions
Ability to stand while preparing materials for facility use
Knowledge of Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
Ability to work as a team
Ability to identify and mitigate safe and unsafe training practices
Ability to utilize eVA or other required purchasing system to purchase supplies and materials
Valid Drivers License
