Position Summary

This position performs a variety of routine laboratory specimen processing functions from patients of all ages to provide data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease. This position receives close clinical supervision of completed work activities from the Specimen Processing Supervisor and does not supervise any other position. The Laboratory Assistant II has advanced certification in the area directly related to their job responsibilities, such as phlebotomy, medical assistant, or laboratory assisting.

Position Duties

  • Processes patient specimens according to established quality standards, methods and practices to prepare them for send out and/or in-house laboratory testing.

  • Demonstrates competency with Sunquest/Smarterm.

  • Electronically receives specimens accurately.

  • Work is performed timely and efficiently.

  • Send out specimens are prepared for shipping accurately and thoroughly.

  • Initiates and maintains confidential records of patient tests and results for ongoing and timely availability for diagnosis and accurate billing to patient record.

  • Patient privacy is maintained with no patient information shared outside the facility.

  • Items containing patient information are disposed of appropriately.

  • Ensures accurate billing of manually ordered tests by accurately using patient identification.

  • Performs regular instrument maintenance and troubleshooting (centrifuge, printer, etc) in accordance with instructions for safe and continuous operations.

  • Items such as centrifuges, refrigerators and printers are used, maintained and kept clean as per policy.

  • Demonstrates professional customer service.

  • Answers department telephones while providing professional, timely and accurate information.

  • Maintains technical competency, pursuing knowledge and self-improvement by being apprised of new developments in the field of specimen collection and/or laboratory medicine.

  • Adapts to changes and incorporates new processes when appropriate.

  • Seeks information when presented with new test orders.

  • Attends continuing education when appropriate.

  • Wears PPE appropriately.

  • Participates in the evaluation and/or development of new procedures, instrumentation and quality improvement initiatives and assists in creating changes to increase department effectiveness.

  • Demonstrates willingness to adapt to new procedures, instrumentation and processes.

  • Participates in the orientation and training of newly hired staff as requested.

  • Assesses specimen quality and integrity for patient age, appropriate type, volume, and patient identification within the scope of their education and training.

  • Incorporates all appropriate factors when determining specimen quality for testing.

  • Understands how to research specimen requirements.

  • Demonstrates a professional, respectful attitude to team workers and is compliant with departmental and organizational policies.

VIEW JOBS 11/4/2018 12:00:00 AM 2019-02-02T00:00 POSITION WILL REMAIN OPEN ON A CONTINUOUS BASIS The Arizona Department of Agriculture is currently recruiting for 27 Laboratory Technician II positions for the Navel Orangeworm Program, Sterile Insect Rearing Facility in Phoenix, Arizona. JOB SUMMARY: The Department of Agriculture's, Plant Services Division, safeguards agriculture, food and the environment from the risks associated with the entry, establishment and spread of plant pests, diseases and noxious weeds thereby promoting agricultural sustainability, market access and competitiveness. Sterile Naval Orangeworm moths are produced at the Phoenix Rearing facility to use in mating disruption of native Naval Orangeworm to control this damaging pest of nut crops. Under general supervision, follow written and oral instruction involving production, packaging, storing and delivery of native, sterilized insects. The incumbent will be required to read figures such as dials, gauges, numbers, and thermometers. The position will implant moth eggs into rearing units and place on rearing carts and move them daily; label equipment and rearing units for future use, cut rearing and nutritional pads for future use and prepare pads for use. Package collected moths for processing, take treated moths to the Phoenix International airport for shipment, return empty shipping boxes and sanitize the boxes. Maintain sanitation of rearing carts, rearing equipment, work area, and prepare materials for the next work day. Drive a state vehicle and other duties as assigned by the supervisor or Facility Director. The division is willing to train the right candidates for the position. The successful candidates will demonstrate the following: KNOWLEDGE OF: * Elementary facts and principals of laboratory sanitation and cleanliness * Laboratory processes and procedures * Good written and oral communication * Packing and storing materials within a laboratory environment * Good/accurate quality control procedures * Use of a microscope SKILLS IN: * Oral/Written communication * Use of laboratory equipment * Quality control ABILITY TO: * Establish an effective relationships with co-workers * Manipulate insect specimens with use of microscope * Understand oral and written direction * Read dials, gauges, numbers, and thermometers * Conduct quality control procedures * Drive a state vehicle SELECTIVE PREFERENCES: One to two year experience in a laboratory. Regulatory experience. All newly hired employees will be subject to the E-Verify Employment Eligibility Verification Program. Special Job Requirements: In-state travel required. Requires possession of and ability to retain a current, valid Arizona state-issued driver's license appropriate to the assignment.
