Toxikon Corporation, originally founded in 1977, is a Contract Research and Testing company with laboratories in Bedford, MA. Our mission is to provide quality pre-clinical research services to Pharmaceutical, Medical Device and Biotech industries.
Toxikon is seeking an experienced Laboratory Animal Veterinarian to join the Veterinary Services department. The Laboratory Animal Veterinarian will maintain the organization's 45,000 square foot USDA registered, AAALAC International, accredited animal facility that houses rodents, rabbits, guinea pigs, dogs, swine, goats and non-human primates. The successful candidate will direct research and development plus biocompatibility studies for the medical device, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry. Additionally, this position will be responsible for training technicians and other Study Directors on veterinary care and surgical protocol designs.
Other duties include instructing research technicians, Study Directors, and Quality Assurance personnel on laboratory animal science, equipment usage, veterinary medicine, animal care laws and regulations. Responsible for standard operating procedures on the veterinary care of multiple species, cage washer operation, animal identification/acclimation, and various testing procedures, veterinary equipment and on environmental enrichment of multiple species.
Assure compliance to all federal, state and voluntary animal welfare laws and regulations. Consults with staff on all related regulatory issues.
Provides support to investigators for research projects involving large and small animal species and consults on animal care and use protocols.
Monitors protocols and procedures for animals from pre-operative through post-operative care.
Directs, along with other veterinary staff, activities of the veterinary technical team.
Implements preventative medicine programs.
Provides clinical care of research animals, as well as clinical oversight/support to animals in housing environments. Participates in clinical rounds to monitor health of animals.
Acts as a liaison between Toxikon's study directors and business development.
Member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC
Participates in and actively supports team management.
Trains departmental personnel and research investigators, wherever required.
Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.
Performs semi-annual inspections and husbandry inspections for the IACUC.
Plans and organizes veterinary drug and equipment purchases.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Operational Focus - perform surgery and veterinary medical care for a variety of species.
Expert knowledge of laboratory research animal care and use regulations, laws, policies and procedures, and research protocol procedures.
Working knowledge (in addition to veterinary sciences) of interdisciplinary scientific fields common to the pre-clinical research community.
Ability to communicate scientific and technical information orally in order to collaborate with scientists, managers, scientific institutions and sponsors.
Ability to use training aids and other training methods to help personnel support the research endeavors across the company.
Ability to edit technical reports, manuscripts and operating procedures for proper veterinary procedures and manipulations.
Veterinary Medical Degree or Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (VMD or DVM).
2-5 years of experience in laboratory animal medicine.
Expert knowledge of Federal, State and other animal welfare standards. i.e. USDA, MSPCA, OLAW and AAALAC.
Basic to advanced surgical skills among various large animal species, including but not limited to non-human primates, dogs, sheep, pigs, goats, rabbits, and/or ferrets as well as small animal species.
DEA license is required.
Licensed in the State of Massachusetts required.
ACLAM diplomat status is preferred.
