Laboratory and Safety Manager (Teaching and Learning Academic Support 3 - MR09)

The Laboratory and Safety Manager is responsible for procurement and management of laboratory equipment and supplies in the Department of Chemistry and Physics. The position also provides oversight of computer use in student computer labs and instructional labs, as well as participation in laboratory instrumentation acquisition and assisting in maintenance of instrumentation and its readiness for lab usage.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Safety and Compliance

Serve as dept. Chemical Hygiene Officer / Hazardous Materials Manager and as the contact person for the campus Emergency Management Team; serve on dept. safety committee; author and annually review safety-related procedures (e.g. chemical hygiene plan, standard operating procedures); coordinate with Safety and Risk Management to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations related to safe work, hazardous materials, hazardous waste, and hazard communication/right-to-know; serve as dept. coordinator for workers compensation and programs with minors paperwork; coordinate and/or conduct periodic inspections of teaching and research laboratories; arrange for removal of hazardous wastes (min. semi-annually); conduct weekly inspections of waste accumulation area and collect waste from labs in a timely fashion; and serve as dept. responsible person for chemical inventory, SDS library, and card access system and as approver for hazmat requests from University and/or external users.

Prepare one one-hour lecture presentation and assessment related to safety literature resources for CHEM3820; and author and review training plans and modules for safety-related procedures; present lab safety refresher for faculty/staff/teaching assistants/research assistants annually.

Procurement and Finances

Prepare annual lab fees budget based on rolling 3-year average expenditures and based on enrollments per course; convene Lab Preparedness Group consisting of: dept. head (optional), Lab Directors, Laboratory Coordinator, and one non-voting student TA representative; serve as dept. procurement/receiving agent for hazardous materials, laboratory supplies, and technological needs; assist with research and procurement of new laboratory synthesis or analytical equipment; serve as dept. primary point of contact for UT Marketplace; coordinate external equipment use requests with the person responsible for that equipment; primary contact for processing of invoices and POs in UT's enterprise resource planning system (=IRIS); and send receipts, etc. in a timely fashion to the dept. Administrative Specialist for p-card and fund ledgers reconciliation.

Maintenance and Repairs

Primary coordinator for dept. work requests and equipment maintenance/service calls; deputy for NMR cryogen fills; primary contact for surplus equipment requests / submissions; annually verify asset inventory and space & key inventories, accd. to University policy; primary contact for maintenance of all teaching laboratory instrumentation (excl. equipment in the instrumental analysis laboratory); and arrange for service, maintenance, and annual calibration of dept. balances and micropipets.

Information Technology

Dept. coordinator for UTC's annual computer upgrade program; maintenance of all dept. owned computers and printers (excl. UTC IT-responsible equipment and any office PCs); coordinate imaging/provisioning of technology for new hires, in concert with UTC IT; and secondary point of contact for administrative-based transactions in IRIS.

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Knowledge of chemical laboratory skills and use of instrumentation

  • Proficiency in laboratory management, including state and federal regulatory compliance

  • Proficiency in computer skills, including word processing, data base management, spreadsheet use, and internet searching

  • Ability to supervise student employees and work in an effective and timely manner to achieve department goals

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

Minimum Qualifications: A Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or related field; minimum of three years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in Chemistry or related field, or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager or Certified Safety Professional.
