Job Duties

The Department of Labor and Industry's Headquarters Office is seeking a highly motivated and skilled individual to work as a full-time Labor Law Compliance Officer.

The Labor and Employment Law Compliance Officer administers minimum wage, payment of wage, youth employment, anti-retaliation and additional labor laws as listed in the Code of Virginia and the rules and regulations of the agency in the most effective and efficient manner possible. This position is also responsible for administering, interpreting, and enforcing State labor laws through comprehensive investigations, informal settlements, and court proceedings. This position testifies in administrative, civil, and criminal court hearings. In addition, this position assists in the preparation and execution of various legal documents.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience performing research and data collection.

  • Experience analyzing written/verbal information and numerical data.

  • Work experience conducting investigations in an enforcement capacity and applying legal or regulatory provisions, precedents, and principles to specific investigative matters.

  • Experience making independent decisions and drawing to conclusions based on interviews, records review, reconstruction of missing or fraudulent records.

  • Significant experience with writing detailed professional and comprehensive reports.

Additional Considerations

  • Significant working knowledge of Federal and State employment laws.

  • Professional training/certifications in areas related to Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, or other related fields and/or equivalent applicable experience or training in the areas of conducting investigations, law enforcement, or regulatory enforcement.

  • Experience with court procedures to include providing courtroom testimony.

  • Knowledge of mediation techniques.

  • Experience creating educational information and conducting group presentations.

  • Verifiable fluency speaking, reading, and writing Spanish.

  • Demonstrated ability to use office management software such as Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).

  • Strong effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, and operating standards.

  • Ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality.

Special Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid driver's license at the time of hiring or within 30 days of hiring. Position is subject to annual driver's license record check.

  • Ability to travel overnight occasionally.

  • Ability to respond to emergency calls after-hours on a rotational schedule or as needed.

  • Ability to perform moderate physical activity that includes, but is not limited to climbing stairs and ladders, bending, walking up and down inclines, occasionally lifting and carrying loads up to 30 pounds, etc.

  • The selected candidate must pass a criminal background investigation, and successfully serve a 12-month probationary period effective from the date of employment if beginning employment as an original hire or re-employment.

The maximum hiring salary for the Labor Law Compliance Officer is $62,732 annually, plus the State's benefits package.
