Job Description


Reporting to the Vice-President, Associate General Counsel, you will partner directly with the Human Resources team and business functions to provide employment-related legal advice and services for the company. This position requires extensive employment law experience, including meaningful labor relations and union avoidance experience.


  • Provide day-to-day proactive employment law advice, assistance and counsel to HR and management on a variety of subjects, including hiring practices and procedures, employee performance management and separations, FMLA and other protected leaves, ADA reasonable accommodation, and wage/hour issues;

  • Ensure compliance with labor and employment laws and regulations, including the development, implementation, interpretation, and maintenance of employment-related HR and operational policies and assistance in development and presentation of education and training materials;

  • With assistance from outside counsel, oversee labor relations items such as the negotiation of collective bargaining agreements, handling of union grievances, labor arbitrations, and ULP charges, implementation of union avoidance best practices and respond to labor organizing campaigns;

  • Manage U.S., Puerto Rican and Canadian employment litigation, working with outside counsel;

  • Investigate and defend state and federal charges of discrimination, wage/hour audits and other regulatory complaints, including preparation of position statements and other responsive documents;

  • Draft employment, settlement and separation agreements;

  • Assist in employment-related aspects of mergers/acquisitions, as well as reductions in force and location closings (e.g., severance, WARN Act);

  • Serve as a key member of the employment law team, leading projects to identify and proactively manage employment-related legal risks;

  • Provide sound legal advice and effectively integrate business and legal issues in such advice


  • Eight (8) to Ten (10) + years of relevant employment and/or labor counsel experience.

  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and problem solving skills.

  • High level of interpersonal skills and ability to work in a proactive and service oriented manner.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.

  • Ability to influence others.

  • Demonstrated ability to work on a variety of projects at the same time, to prioritize and to meet deadlines.

  • Must have a collaborative style and ability to work in a team environment.

  • Self-starter with strong work ethic.

  • Some overnight travel required.


Juris Doctorate degree (J.D.) from an accredited law school required, and eight (8) to ten (10) + years of relevant experience. Prior in-house counsel experience a plus, but not required.

Position will be located in either the Roanoke, VA or Raleigh, NC offices of the Company. Relocation assistance available.

Additional responsibilities to include the following: Essential Functions and Primary Duties: * Implementation of Time Solutions Accounts * Research, collect, manipulate, interpret, and verify accuracy of all data needed to set up new accounts * Utilize client accrual policies to script into the time clock during implementation and/or for current clients when requested and confirm balances are accurate. * Provide training sessions/materials to clients utilizing the Time Solutions system * Research and accurately resolve a full range of customer service needs in the Time Solutions system in a timely, efficient, and accurate manner * Assist with internal needs/training regarding accounts * Work closely with Payroll and Implementation Team to collaborate on complex client issues and departmental processes and procedures. * Allocate time and prioritize accordingly across several projects * Ensure every client interaction is a positive and productive experience * Troubleshoot basic and intermediate level client issues * Communicate effectively * Meet established deadlines * Effectively operates and uses all departmental hardware and software * Independently perform each essential function of this job satisfactorily * Perform other duties as assigned Preferred Qualifications: * Bachelor's degree preferred * Experience with scripting languages (SQl, VB, Java) highly desired * TLM system experience preferred * Proficient use of Excel * Working level knowledge of payroll processes a plus Minimum Qualifications: * Must possess analytical skills * Excellent customer relation skills * Ability to work in a team environment as well as independently * Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and pay close attention to detail on many, varied tasks * Ability to communicate verbally and in writing throughout all levels of organization, both internally and externally * High school diploma or GED required Cbiz, Inc.
