The Wage and Hour Division at the IDOL has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Labor Compliance Officer Trainee. This position will be located in Burley or Idaho Falls. This position is instrumental in administering Idaho's labor laws and assisting claimants in filing wage claims. The ideal candidate has strong financial skills, an analytical approach to problem solving, excellent communication skills, attention to detail and the ability to work independently and on a team. This position will be used as an underfill to the Labor Compliance Officer classification. Upon completion of a probationary period, the candidate will be reclassified to the Labor Compliance Officer classification.

While the ability to speak and read both Spanish and English fluently would be an advantage, it is not required for this position (see question 5).

Example of Duties

  • Administer Idaho's labor laws using the Department's current interpretations;
  • Assist claimants in filing wage claims;
  • Conduct claim investigations of all potential issues on each wage claim filed;
  • Issue determinations based on all issues documented and facts of the claim;
  • Conduct pre-claim investigations and investigations of minimum wage and wage payment law complaints;
  • Notify employers of complaints and noncompliance, and discuss conformance problems and possible solutions;
  • Investigate complaints of Idaho's labor law violations and explains the Department's current interpretation;
  • Consult with employees, employers, attorneys and any other constituents on federal laws;
  • Interview claimants and employers to gather evidence for use in the prosecution of violators;
  • Facilitate meetings with employers and claimants to settle disputes/claims;
  • Advise employers and claimants of alternative solutions and settlements;
  • Prepare detailed investigative reports;
  • Make presentations to groups or individuals on Idaho's labor laws;
  • Provide assistance to employers in developing policies and manuals that conform to Idaho state labor laws;
  • Provide information to farm labor employees, contactors and employers of Idaho's farm laborers about contractor licensing laws.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Some knowledge of payroll record systems;
  • Experience questioning individuals to obtain detailed information;
  • Experience understanding, applying and explaining laws and regulations;
  • Experience preparing narrative reports.
