The Becker Laboratory is seeking a Laboratory Technician to provide technical support and perform experiments investigating aspects of bone metabolism, including crosstalk with the nervous system and bone cell function funded by grants and contracts obtained by the PI. This is a full-time position including benefits with occasional weekend hours, conference travel, and community outreach events. Responsibilities

  • Perform various experimental protocols involving cell culture, rodent surgeries, immunohistochemistry, microscopy, and molecular analysis relevant to the PI's project in bone and neuroscience.

  • Participate in ongoing studies in mouse models including animal handling and genotyping.

  • Prepare reagents and buffers and perform routine laboratory maintenance and cleaning duties.

  • Keep records of experimental data. Maintain complete and accurate logs containing methodological details and results.

  • Perform data entry and analysis. Graph data for presentation in posters, manuscripts, and PowerPoint presentations.

  • Present data at lab meetings, attend local conferences, and occasional travel to regional and national meetings.

  • Maintain equipment and make sure all equipment is running optimally. Coordinate student researchers and technicians' use of equipment.

  • Perform inventory and order laboratory supplies.

  • Make sure the laboratory supplies are organized and properly labeled for use and checked for expiration dates.

  • Maintain laboratory space in a clean and safe fashion.

  • Train undergraduates as needed.

  • Understand and comply with the University of New England Safety Manual and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) approved protocols.

  • Successfully complete initial training for Hazardous waste handling, IACUC, and other indicated training within 90 days of date of hire. Ongoing training and refresher courses as needed.

  • Understand and comply with MSDS and HAZCOM procedures and policies as part of UNE's comprehensive OSHA compliance program, and IACUC approved protocols.

  • Understand and comply with OSHA requirements (29 CRF Part 1910) for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as defined by the University Chemical Hygiene Officers, the Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator (EHSC), the supervisor and Chapter 17 of the University of New England Safety Manual.

  • Understands and complies with Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Standards.

  • Other duties may also be assigned.

Qualifications

The applicant must have a Bachelor's Degree. Prior experience with sterile cell culture, mouse handling, microscopy, PCR and undergraduate research preferred, but not required.
