The Penn State Berkey Creamery is currently seeking a student intern to assist in the quality assurance and quality control laboratory. Duties are:

Assist in the development of SOP's, SSOP's, GMP's and other laboratory and manufacturing procedures; Prepare supplies for routine daily testing including filling pipet tips, running the autoclave, preparing dilution bottles, etc.; Learn proper techniques and methodologies as well as conduct routine compositional analysis of finished products to assure compliance with quality standards; Learn proper techniques and methodologies as well as conduct routine microbiological testing of finished products to assure compliance with quality standards; High focus on reading microbial plates and testing methods for Coliforms and Aerobics; Evaluate equipment and methods for improved chemical, physical and microbiological testing as deemed appropriate; Actively participate in trials in the Creamery plant using plant equipment in conjunction with the Technical Service Staff and Creamery Management; Collect, analyze, review and summarize data, as required, to support the manufacture of existing products; Prepare and organize documentation associated with the various quality pre-requisite programs such as sanitation schedules, maintenance schedules, allergen programs, pest control programs, etc.; Participate in quality inspections; Check products for shelf life as well as design and conduct storage stability studies including analytical, physical, microbiological and organoleptic testing as deemed appropriate for existing products and ingredients; Conduct temperature checks on laboratory and plant equipment; calibrate as necessary; Prepare written final reports; present summaries of findings to Creamery Management and Food Science Staff, as deemed appropriate; Participate in off-site field trips to enhance learning as deemed appropriate; Maintain clean work areas to the satisfaction of the supervisor; Interact with Creamery Management and Staff, Technical Service Staff, Food Science Staff and other internal or external associates as deemed appropriate; Participate in special projects or perform other tasks and duties as requested by supervisor; Any other tasks as trained and assigned by Quality Manager. The intern position is under the direction of the Berkey Creamery Management and Food Science Department. The intended outcome of the internship is to gain a basic understanding of the concepts and skills associated with quality assurance and manufacturing through a hands-on approach.

The position requires a minimum of 10 hours per week commitment. Pre-requisites: Preliminary coursework in Quality Assurance, Food Science or related fields. Preferably experience in a laboratory or food manufacturing environment.

A candidate must have a Master's degree in education, psychology, or a related field; be skilled at facilitating mindfulness-based activities; be detail oriented and organized; and demonstrate strong ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff.
