Under the general direction of LSS Senior Technical Director, the Supervisor is responsible for managing the Clinical Operations of Laboratory Support Services. The incumbent will interview, hire, train, schedule and evaluate performance of all assigned staff. Supervise the day-to-day operations of assigned locations and staff including scheduling, payroll and assisting with patient issues as needed.
Supervise the assigned coordinators, phlebotomists, and any other unit staff. Appraise performance annually in accordance with HR expectations.
Recruit, hire and terminate in conjunction with the LSS Senior Technical Director
Utilize corrective action as appropriate and in conjunction with Human Resources and unit management.
Complete or delegate the orientation, training and scheduling of new staff.
Conduct staff meetings as needed for assigned staff as directed.
Establish the schedule for Lab Support Services for outpatient specimen transport rounds and outpatient phlebotomy services at the WACC221 Specimen Collection Center, and at other locations that LSS may obtain specimens, and coordinate the schedule for. Ensure that appropriate staff is on hand and arrange for back up as needed. Ensure fair and equitable distribution of job assignments. Ensure that all personnel are aware of and have access to LSS procedures and policies. Update this information as applicable and/or annually for review by the Medical Director.
Ensure that annual required training takes place with regards to health, safety and compliance.
Ensure that annual competencies are completed in compliance with JCAHO regulations.
Attend monthly meetings of the Pathology Department, and MGH as directed.
Provide oversight for other areas of LSS as needed or directed by unit management.
Monitor for quality assurance and effective customer service for phlebotomy operations. Participate with completion of monthly patient and quality control statistics.
Assist staff as needed with continuing education, mandatory annual education, certification and other needs as indicated through quality assurance monitors and staff requests
Ensure that the appropriate supplies are used by LSS staff, and problem solve supply issues as required
Keep abreast of infection control and safety regulations as they pertain to the unit and disseminate information as needed
Maintain contact with Unit managers, Medical Staff, Professional Staff and Administrators as necessary for the appropriateness of service.
Maintain proficiency in all facets of phlebotomy training as necessary for the proper operation of the department and maintain phlebotomy certification along with any other required certifications and competencies.
Assure that adequate communication is maintained between shifts and days (inc any weekend or holiday assignments) for continuity of service.
Implement and maintain HR policies including disciplinary actions and general administrative issues.
May assist with special projects as needed.
Ensure that employee files are current.
May investigate specimen collection issues, or delegates to a coordinator, and reports findings, causes etc. to supervisor
Insure that employees take lunch and breaks as scheduled or delegate to appropriate and trained staff.
Carry and answers department beeper, or delegates to appropriate personnel.
Assign (delegate) or redistribute staff to meet peak, or unusual patient census changes, and/or to meet short-term fluctuations in patient volume.
Assist with and participate in the management of assigned Covid screening areas under LSS.
Working with assign coordination, manage staffing and equitable distribution of staffing and training to all necessary operation areas. Backup and coordinate with other supervisors of LSS as identified.
Bachelor's degree preferred.
Associate degree or equivalent required, or a minimum of five years experience as a supervisor or manager in a health care field.
Current phlebotomy certification required.
