The Dwyer lab in the Department of Cell Biology, at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, is seeking a Lab Specialist to work on experiments to understand normal and abnormal brain development, utilizing molecular biology, mouse genetics, cell culture, immunocytochemistry, and microscopy. The incumbent will work closely with the PI and other lab members to complete tasks to support NIH-funded research and investigate how neural stem cells divide to produce neurons, and the function of cytoskeletal proteins during cell division and cell shape changes.

The Lab Specialist will also be responsible for laboratory maintenance. This includes maintaining mouse colonies, genotyping, ordering and maintaining supplies, preparing stock solutions, maintaining equipment, training of other personnel, and assisting the PI with environmental health and safety compliance.

The position requires appropriate data analysis including statistics, lab notebook and electronic data keeping, and clear data presentation. Knowledge of PCR, Molecular Biology, Microscopy, Tissue Sectioning, Cell Culture, Immunoblotting and Animal Husbandry is preferred.

This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Education: A Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, or a related field, is required. Major or minor in a biomedical science is preferred.

Experience: A minimum of three years of laboratory experience is required; lab experience as a student may substitute for this requirement.

Preferred experience includes PCR, molecular biology, mouse husbandry, tissue culture, immunoblotting, biochemistry, and microscopy techniques. The successful applicant will demonstrate history of: 1) excellent work ethic and above average productivity; 2) meticulous attention to detail; 3) functioning collaboratively. Additional requirements include attention to detail in experimental work and record keeping, ability to handle multiple assignments, working with others, self-motivation and eagerness to acquire new skills.

Berne Cardiovascular Research Center (CVRC) is currently seeking a Laboratory and Research Specialist or Intermediate to be assigned to the Sonkusare Lab. The Sonkusare laboratory studies ion channels and calcium signaling mechanisms in the microcirculation under normal and disease conditions. The laboratory employs state-of-the-art calcium imaging, patch clamp electrophysiology, functional assays, radio-telemetric blood pressure measurements, and transgenic mouse models. The overarching goal is to discover novel strategies for rescuing endothelium-dependent vasodilation in vascular disorders including obesity and pulmonary hypertension. The incumbent participates in research to understand ion channel signaling networks that control the diameter of blood vessels in health and disease. Duties include participating in research experiments involving small blood vessels, including high-resolution calcium imaging, functional studies in pressurized arteries, and image analysis. The incumbent also manages a mouse colony and is responsible for mouse inventories, breeding, genotyping, and maintaining of an electronic database. Experience in handling mice, small tissue dissection, and molecular biology techniques (real time PCR, western blotting, and transfection) is preferred. The successful candidate will also work with students, post-docs, and other members of the lab to assist in conducting all aspects of experiments. The position requires coordinating research projects and logistics with other lab members; compliance with University, Federal, and State policies and procedures; consulting with the Principle Investigator regularly; and oversight of laboratory purchasing, equipment, and supplies required for operation of the laboratory. The successful Lab and Research Specialist candidate is required to have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in a science-related field and at least three years of laboratory experience which may include experience gained while a student. The successful Lab and Research Specialist Intermediate candidate is required to have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in a science-related field and six years of laboratory experience. A related master's degree may substitute for two years of experience. Experience gained as a student may be considered. The individual should be self-guided and creative in seeking possible solutions to experimental/design challenges at hand and have strong communication skills.
