Qualifications

All required qualifications must be documented on application materials.

Required Qualifications:
High school or equivalent graduate plus 2 years of college coursework in a related field and a minimum of 2 years of large animal handling experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

AAS in related field of study

Credentialed Veterinary Technician (CVT/LVT/RVT)

Large animal clinical experience

Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds

Experience in teaching/mentoring

Experience with Microsoft Office, Google platform, Excel, and Canvas

About the Job

This is a 9-month appointment, following the academic year appointment dates (end of August to end of May)

Job Duties (training provided):

40% - Preparation for Lab Courses

Lab set-up and clean-up

Develop instructional materials; re-design and update existing course materials

Self preparation for in-lab teaching (reading, practicing techniques, running simulations, etc.)

45% - Assist in Lab Courses (contact time with students)

In-lab teaching and support

5% - Lab and Supply Inventory/Maintenance

Supply ordering and inventory management

Oversee student workers

5% - Assist with exams, grading, and general course support

Assist faculty with set-up, proctor, clean-up, and grading of examinations

Course Canvas site and student accommodations management

5% - Other duties as assigned

Additional duties include evaluation of learning system design and recommendation of changes for improvement, assisting in preparation and dissemination of teaching materials, coordination with student organizations, and assisting students with projects as needed.

Salary Range: $17.63 to $23.28

Minimum/Required Qualifications One year of post high school experience or education in veterinary assisting which includes: animal restraint, veterinary terminology, veterinary anatomy, pateient first aid, and medication administration. Experience/education must include one year of large animal handling experience. Preferred Qualifications/Selection Criteria: Problem solving skills, strong interpersonal skills, knowledge of veterinary medicine terminology, knowledge of proper restraint and comfort handling large animals. Flexibility to meet patient care needs. Proficient with PC and software. About the Job Variable schedule Essential Functions * Prepares large animal patients for a variety of veterinary medical procedures including radiographs, surgery, foal and colic team assistance, administration of oral medications and treatments, preparation of pharmaceuticals, etc. * Must be able to restrain and handle large animals and/or assist with large animal restraint and handling. * Under the direction of DVMs, IV injections, administer medications, & bandaging. * With oversight by a DVM, administers medications and others as defined by the duty clinicians. * Applies clinical job knowledge and competence to the management of the patient. * Maintains isolation protocols. * Barn upkeep and some maintenance. * Delivers outstanding customer service. * Performs record-keeping tasks related to medical procedures, including recording of: procedures completed, supplies used, patient status, census information, etc. * Responsible to ensure that all services and supplies are charged for according to hospital fee schedule. * Maintains a clean environment in hospital area and ensures that these areas are adequately ordered, stocked and that equipment is in working order. * Must have the ability to work in a clinical setting. * Must be able to work "on call". * Must be able to restrain and jog LA patients. * Other duties as assigned by Supervisor, Clinician, or Director Salary Range: $16.15-$18.56/hour About the Department The Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) has served the community for more than a century. It is the most advanced, full-service referral care center for large and small animals in Minnesota. The VMC sees more than 35,000 cases annually, with specialists available in all areas of medicine and surgery. More than 50 of the veterinarians on staff have undergone several years of additional training to become board-certified specialists in a particular area of veterinary medicine. The Veterinary Medical Center is comprised of the Small Animal Hospital for dogs, cats, and other companion animals, the Piper Clinic at the new Leatherdale Equine Center, for horses, and the Large Animal Hospital, which treats farm animals, and occasionally, zoo animals.
