Lab Scientist / Senior Research Associate

Position Summary:

BGI Americas is seeking an exceptional and motivated laboratory associate who will work in the San Jose Mass Spectrometry (SJMS) center. The main responsibility of this position is to assist the SJMS production team with routine lab operations and lab maintenance. The candidate will need to demonstrate that he/she is capable of consistently following Standard Operational Procedures (SOP) to consistently perform sample preparation procedures for proteomics and biologics characterization analysis. A candidate with hands-on experience in HPLC, Orbitrap mass spec and/or liquid handling automation is desired.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Follow SOPs to conduct experiments in a timely manner, including: Upfront sample extraction, MS sample preparation, sample purification/fractionation and LC-MS Operations

  • Check and maintain wet lab devices

  • Manage and maintain lab consumables inventories

  • Unpackage and install new instruments/devices

  • Assist with development of new methods; including method developments for sample preparation, chromatography methods and/or mass spectrometry methods

  • Routinely report, update and communicate with SJMS lab manager about lab operational issues

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. / M.S. / B.S. degree with biochemistry/chemistry major or related field with at least 2-5 years of experience. Core lab experience is a plus

  • Experienced with proteomics and/or biologics characterization is a plus

  • Follow SOPs to consistently prepare samples

  • Effectively document fine details/incidents of the experiments

  • Experienced in handling various kinds of sample preparations including chemical standards, purified proteins, cell lysates, biological fluids or dissected tissue

  • Strong communication skills

  • Work in both independent and collaborative environment

  • Hands-on experience in HPLC, UPLC and mass spectrometry is desired

  • Hands-on experience with liquid handling automation is a plus
