The Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE) lab manager manages the daily and long-term operations of the department's teaching and research labs. They provide technical support and guidance with teaching and research in these spaces by creating and enforcing workflows, managing safety procedures and PPE, and establishing protocols for safe and effective space and equipment usage. The individual serves as the direct contact with University Facilities and Environmental Health and Safety Departments. They serve as the Department's Lab Safety Manager which includes training of undergraduate and graduate students on safe practices, required routine testing of chemical safety infrastructure, overseeing maintenance of the department chemical inventory, maintaining researcher training documentation, conducting lab inspections, and responding and reporting on lab safety incidents. The lab manager directly supervises student workers in the managed spaces. The position's oversight includes support and training for undergraduate and graduate students and support to faculty with academic and research projects-this includes maintaining, repairing, and updating equipment in the managed space, designing and fabricating experimental setups for conducting research and teaching labs, maintaining chemical and material inventories, and providing additional assistance to constituents as needed. The lab manager also assists with student-design projects.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Creation and oversight of workflows and safety, and establishing protocols and space and equipment usage guidelines in the Chemical and Biological Engineering research labs, Unit Operations Lab, and Biollogical Engineering teaching lab. Cunducts and oversees the annual fixed asset inventory report, lab safety inspections, and chemical inventory.

  • Responsible for the maintenance, updating and repair of equipment, instrumentation, and apparatus in the research and instructional labs, whch supperts faculty research and instructon in the unit operations courses, technical communication courses, senior project studio, and senior capstone. Supporting the research mission of the department and college by providing equipment maintenance and repair support for sponsored and other research projects and experiments conducted by graduate students and faculty.

  • Maintaining inventory of chemicals and materials, and ensuring PPE is available for students. Maintaining a clean, secure, safe, organized lab environment for faculty, staff, and students.

  • Manage the upkeep, renovation and calibration of equipment within the managed space; attend necessary trainings and obtain required certifications to use equipment

  • Collaborate with other College lab personnel, the College Facilities Manager, Environmental Health and Safety and other necessary constituents on capital expenditures and any relating installations, inventory practices and asset management, as well as general maintenance of managed spaces.

  • Oversee, manage, and plan an equipment and supplies budget of $50k.

  • Perform other duties and assist with projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Individual must have a bachelor's degree or in lieu an equivalent combination of education or experience.

  • Individual must have 3-5 years' work experience in a related field and/or laboratory environment, including:

  • Experience working in a chemical laboratory, maintaining s common shop equipment for mechanical and electrical maintenance and repair of equipment required.

  • Knowledge of laboratory safety and ability to maintain a chemical inventory required.

  • Knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, mechanical devices and electrical testing tools required.

  • Ability to fabricate and run lab experimental setups is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in a related field preferred, as well as experience working with students in education-centric labs and/or environments a plus.

  • Additional preferred qualifications include:

  • Computer competency and use of Microsoft suite of products.

  • Ability to create workplans, proposals, and reports in written document, email, presentation and verbal format.

  • Knowledge of Python coding, NI LabView.

  • Knowledge of 3D Printing would be a plus.

  • Manufacturing experience with AutoCAD or Solidworks and mechanical drafting.

  • Computer competency and use of Microsoft suite of products.

  • An ability to create workplans, proposals, and reports in written document, email, presentation and verbal format.
