The Laboratory Manager manages a 24/7 laboratory of four to seven professionals and is responsible for policy and procedure creation and revision and compliance with state and federal regulations and surveys. The lab manager works on the bench for 20%-30% of the time. The lab supports the following functions: General Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Blood Banking, Point of Care testing and basic Microbiology. We primarily use Quest as our reference lab. Our EMR is athena and we are implementing Orchard as our Laboratory information System. We perform about 2,400 tests per month, supporting three clinics and outpatient and inpatient hospital tests. We are the only lab in our county.
We are looking for an individual with management experience, good lab bench skills, and a focus on quality, compliance, and education. In the FY2019 timeframe the lab manager will be focused on the training of staff, continued excellence in quality and performance, and optimizing the Orchard implementation.
The hospital employs about 160 people and the Lab Manager position is a key member of the management team. Reporting directly to the CNO, the lab manager is responsible for the day to day management of lab processes and the future expansion of in-house lab capabilities.

Lab Manager Specific
Develops lab staffing schedule and ensures 24/7 coverage.
Maintains lab policies and procedures in compliance with all regulating bodies.
Maintains a laboratory training and quality improvement plan.
Mentor and train staff on new equipment, policies and procedures.
Proactively develop better practices to promote the highest level of quality assurance.
Performs equipment purchases as needed in alignment with department budget.
Maintains service contracts and ensures proper function of all lab equipment.
Creates and maintains department budget.
Maintains knowledge of lab staff functions through frequent and regular bench work.
Medical Technologist Specific
Correctly collects and prepares human samples for analysis. Prepares, stores and transports samples using appropriate methods.
Correctly and accurately performs a variety of tests in the clinical laboratory, including chemistry, hematology, microbiology culture plating, serology/immunology and blood bank.
Completes annual competency assessment.
Alters or adjusts methods and procedures for the neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient.
Notifies ordering provider, charge nurse and/or patient of all critical lab results.
Operates, calibrates, conducts performance checks, and maintains clinical laboratory instruments or equipment and documents results.
Recognizes and corrects basic instrument malfunctions as able, initiates service call when needed.
Performs and records all quality control procedures required for the tests assayed. Recognizes and responds to unacceptable quality control results. Notifies Laboratory Manager of unacceptable results and steps taken to resolve. Documents all corrective actions implemented.
Observes established safety measures and Standard Precautions. Assists in preparing, reviewing and revising policies and procedures.
Participates in continuing education.
Complies with policies, procedures and documentation requirements to meet the standards of accrediting and/or regulatory agencies.
Consults Laboratory Manager and/or Pathologist regarding unusual results.
Demonstrates professionalism, competency and appropriate demeanor with patients and all TVHC Employees.
Assumes call responsibilities for nights, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.
Assists with any other duties as assigned.
Medical Laboratory Expertise
This position operates in a professional laboratory environment located within a Critical Access Hospital. This role routinely uses computers, photo copiers, and both cell and land line phones. Frequent contact with staff, patients, and community members is to be expected. Position requires a high degree of confidentiality and HIPAA compliance. Hazards may include but are not limited to exposure to contagious diseases and atmospheric
conditions that include exposure to fumes and mists. This position is required to maintain Universal Body Substance Isolation precautions and to wear Protective Clothing/Devices that include gloves, masks, gowns, aprons, and protective glasses.
Minimum of 3 years laboratory experience
MT(ASCP) or CLS certification
Competent with microbiology, blood bank, equipment purchase, service contracts, and budget creation and maintenance
Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
Good interpersonal skills in dealing with patients, families, and all health care professionals and TVHC staff
Basic knowledge in computer use; including word processing and spreadsheet applications
Excellent organizational skills
Ability to maintain and follow guidelines set for standards of practice in quality patient care, and infection control practices as required by state, federal, and hospital policy/regulation.
Recent Work as Laboratory Lead or above
Strong procedure writing and revision skills
Previous experience as Laboratory Manager or Department Head in Hospital Setting
CPR/BLS Healthcare Certification

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL & MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to walk or stand at least 70% of the time.
Ability to frequently stoop, crouch or reach below, at, or above shoulder level for short periods of time.
Manual dexterity, ability to concentrate, and good eye-hand coordination required
Vision requiring near and far acuity, depth perception, and an ability to adjust focus and maintain a good field of vision is required for patient observation and documentation
Must be able to move throughout the facility transporting files and other items weighing up to 25 pounds on a frequent basis.
