Job Description

Summary of Position

The Lab Manager is responsible for the preparation and monitoring of all activities necessary for the safe and efficient operation of Chemistry and Physics laboratories.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Organize and maintain a safe and functional environment in the chemistry stockrooms.

  • Oversee safe working and learning spaces in teaching and research laboratories in chemistry and physics.

  • Order chemicals, supplies, and maintain an organized and up-to-date chemical inventory with SDS records.

  • Maintain a safe working environment and compliance with all state and federal safety regulations; conduct regular lab safety training for faculty and students; serve as Chemical Safety Officer for the Chemistry and Physics Departments, managing the hazardous waste, including packing, labeling, profiling, storing and coordinating the pickup of materials.

  • Help with set-up and operation of various basic instruments in the department; ensure all equipment is regularly serviced and any maintenance issues are handled in a timely manner, and maintain a maintenance record.

  • Set up and take down lower division teaching labs (Gen Chem, Organic, Quantitative Analysis, etc.) each week.

  • Participate in the management of student workers in the Chemistry and Physics Department.

  • Teach 1-2 introductory labs per semester (dependent on credentials).

  • Work with faculty to develop the introductory chemistry and physics lab curriculum.

  • Meet weekly with introductory lab instructors.

Additional Responsibilities

  • May be required to perform as a First Responder, and must possess adequate training and certification.

  • Be willing to serve as a member of the University's safety committee.

  • Potential to collaborate with faculty in the development of new experiments as needed; optimize existing experiments for safety, educational value, and minimize waste production.

  • Perform all other duties as apparent or assigned by supervisor(s).

Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • On-site in both an office, laboratory, classroom setting.

  • Regular computer and phone use.

  • Will also perform work in a laboratory setting where the use of chemicals or chemical agents is routine.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or related field and three (3) years of experience OR equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Adequate knowledge of state and federal regulations pertaining to the collection, storage, and disposal of chemical wastes.

  • Adequate knowledge of state and federal safety regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or PhD in chemistry.

  • Additional experience in lab safety training.

  • Previous teaching experience.

  • Possess the ability to function independently and effectively resolve problems, meet deadlines, and produce quality work with attention to detail.

  • Communicate effectively and work collaboratively with departmental faculty, students, and other personnel on campus.

  • Be highly organized; Possess strong computer skills in using Word and Excel.

  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a diverse work environment.

  • Ability to be attentive to details, be accurate, be precise.

  • Ability to lead/teach and mentor others.

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment; and work independently with little supervision.

  • Ability to reason/analyze; maintain confidentiality; and demonstrate patience, understanding.

  • Ability to show initiative; organize workflow; manage projects; and handle frequent interruptions.
