  • La Porte has been the heart of healthcare in La Porte for more than 40 years. The hospital provides acute care with strong programs in cardiology, orthopedics, surgical services, emergency care, oncology, and maternal health.

The MT/MLT Lab Lead coordinates and provides oversight for all the activities of the assigned section/shift in order to provide high-quality laboratory services for patients, physicians, patient care staff, and other appropriate health care providers.

  • Essential Functions:

  • Ensures all tests are performed following established procedures and results are recorded in the LIS or on the proper log sheet. Resolves all test discrepancies and reviews and resolves unusual or spurious results prior to their release. Ensures that appropriate turnaround times are met for testing performed in their section or shift.

  • Establishes a system for reviewing results including pending worksheets and takes appropriate action if discrepancies are found. Maintains quality control records and takes appropriate action when limits are exceeded. Performs quality control procedures on a routine basis for Checking the control records for precision and accuracy according to the established guidelines. Takes appropriate action for out of control quality control results. reviews quality control daily, weekly, and monthly. Maintains linearity checks on instrumentation (N/A for PM Shift Lead).

  • Helps to compile the monthly workload statistics for the assigned section as needed.

  • Performs daily maintenance on laboratory equipment. Records instrument function checks and reviews any abnormal instrument function results. (N/A for PM Shift Lead)

  • Responsible for oversight of instrument maintenance and minor repairs. Documents instrument downtime and malfunctions.

  • Proficiency Testing:

  • Ensures all testing has appropriate proficiency testing done as required.

  • Plans proficiency testing rotation schedule

  • Participates in proficiency testing surveys

  • Investigates failures and makes corrections.

  • Prepares Technicians (MLT) and Technologists (MT) in their assigned areas/shifts through documented comprehensive training and competency. MLT Section Leads shall review training and competency documents with Lab Director to sign.

  • Requisitions necessary supplies for the section as required. Assists in planning the section's capital budget.

  • Follows established safety procedures according to OSHA standards and La Porte Hospital departmental policy. Maintains cleanliness of department and working area at all times.

  • Suggests changes in workflow, instrument arrangement, and techniques to increase efficiency and/or accuracy in all laboratory sections. Helps control costs where possible on reagents and supplies.

  • Ensures the safety of all laboratory colleagues monitoring and direct feedback.

  • Collects and maintains all records for the area of responsibility.

  • Reviews departmental procedures and always keeps them updated and current. Non-Blood Bank MT leads - signs procedures every 2 years if no changes are needed. Blood Bank MT leads - needs Medical Director Signature on all procedures, even if nothing has changed. MLT section leads

  • Lab Director or MT section lead to sign procedures if no changes are needed. For all Leads - if more than minor changes occur, the Medical Director must sign.

Education:

Prefer a Bachelor of Science in a relevant chemical, biological, physical, or clinical science. and experience equivalent to an MT(ASCP) or MLS(ASCP). Associates of Science in a relevant chemical, biological, physical, or clinical science and experience equivalent to an MLT(ASCP) is also acceptable.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years experience in the section being led with at least 4 years experience in a relevant technical role preferred.

  • Requires ASCP certification as referenced above
