Responsible for the glassware washing and sterilization and the disposal of Bio hazardous and chemical waste in the Central Reference Laboratory. Properly prepares clinical specimens and media for routine shipments.

Receives clinical specimens from submitting veterinarians and owners. Reviews laboratory submission form and reconciles with samples. Assigns laboratory accession case number and test codes; labels samples and sees that they are delivered to the appropriate laboratory section.

Following established protocols routinely makes initial decisions concerning appropriateness of specimens received for the tests requested. Records pertinent case histories by questioning animal owners and veterinarians submitting samples. Responsible for cleanliness of receiving area and replenishing of supplies, as needed. Answers inquiries regarding receiving and/or submission and testing of samples.

Physical Demands:

Ability to handle animals and restrain large animals.

Lift specimens and materials weighing up to 40 lbs.

Repetitive grasping, uncapping, pipetting, etc.

Work Environment:

THIS IS NOT AN H1B/J1 OPPORTUNITY.

This is not a research position. The position is located in a diagnostic laboratory where quality control and assurance as well as meticulous working habits are essential.

Per the terms and agreements of the department's contracts and grants, the position requires signing of a Confidentiality Agreement or Non-Disclosure Agreement regarding testing and client information.

Occasional overtime and share weekend/holiday coverage as needed. In addition, in the event of outbreak(s), this position will be required to work unpredictable hours including weekend.

Occasional travel to CAHFS branch laboratories, conferences, etc.

All CAHFS employees must know and follow job safety procedures, attend required health and safety training, proactively promote safety at work, and promptly report actual and potential accidents and injuries.

Must wear laboratory required/supplied PPE and participate in Health Surveillance Program.

This position is subject to prophylactic vaccination for rabies, as well as medical surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.

Tolerate strong odors and the sight of exposed animal tissues and blood products, and to handle/dispose of infectious materials.

May, at times, work with or be in areas where biohazardous and chemical materials and infectious diseases are present. Specific hazards of the position are, but are not limited to salmonella, Listeria, E. coli, Campylobacter, hot acids, bases, ethers and other chemicals.

Minimum Qualifications:

Excellent customer service and interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to effectively interact with a wide variety of clients, co-workers in various discipline within the laboratory, and individuals from other University units, government/outside agencies both in person and on the phone.

Skills working in flexible conditions and to handle a high volume of work in a short period of time.

Knowledge of basic biology and/or chemistry used in preparation of microbiological media, buffers and diagnostic testing reagents.

Excellent skills in providing attention to detail and high level of accuracy.

Working knowledge of diagnostic procedures and tests used in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory.

Skills to provide test results to clientele including providing definition of test terminology.

Skills to learn appropriate samples for a variety of microbiologic, immunologic, histologic and clinical chemistry tests and adverse sample conditions that may affect testing.

Skills to recognize names of diseases and conditions from submittals where the sample may be a biohazard to laboratory personnel or may be a state or federal reportable disease.

Knowledge of and skills to handle and dispose of waste solvents and biologically hazardous materials.

Experience in following established safety protocols and safe working practices and to appropriately handle/dispose of infectious materials and to instruct and oversee Student Assistants performing these duties.

Skills to use analytical balances, volumetric glassware, PH meters, centrifuges, automated dispensing equipment, sterilizing ovens, glass washers and dryers, and autoclaves.

Skills to follow protocols regarding sample storage.

Skills to accurately calculate and perform dilutions. Skills in sterile techniques. Skills to calculate molarity and normality.

Knowledge of regulations for intra and interstate transport/shipping of bio hazardous materials to and from clinics and other laboratories.

Knowledge of veterinary and medical terminology.

Skills to perform cost effective ordering of laboratory/office supplies, skills to perform filing, and organization of laboratory inventory.

Skills to work with blood, dead animals, and tissues.

Organizational skills to maintain laboratory inventory.

Communication skills to contact technical representatives concerning biologics, laboratory supplies, equipment, and/or equipment repairs.

Skills to handle potentially infectious material.

Skills to maintain confidentiality of client information and personnel-related matters.

Computer skills to quickly/accurately perform data entry into computer.

Skill to learn computer programs designed for sample tracking, worksheet production, and workload reporting.

Skills to perform cataloging and filing of information (software and hard copy).

Skills to handle and restrain live and dead animals (cattle, pigs, horses, poultry, zoo animals, etc.), as well as blood and tissues.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ability to learn UC purchasing policies, procedures and forms.

Skill to learn computer programs designed for sample tracking, worksheet production, and workload reporting.
