This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007 and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007 governs the terms and conditions of employment.
This position within the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery will support the continued efforts to build and expand our human biorepository tissue bank collaborations, obtain tissue from surgical cases, and manage clinical database. Hours will be from 9am 6pm, this position requires to be on call during evenings/early morning every other week.
Major research projects depend largely on tissue and blood specimens from human subjects undergoing a cardiac surgery operation. This position is for an individual who will split his/her time between collecting/organizing tissue specimens in the operating room and collecting/entering/retrieving patient data for the clinical database and for ongoing and new clinical research studies.
Tissue collected from the OR will need to be prepared (eg, snap-frozen or placed into preservative solutions), apportioned, labeled, and transported to the various laboratories. Demographic and clinical data will need to be collected from patient charts and entered into the database or retrieved for clinical research studies. Informed consent will need to be obtained from patients in clinic or inpatient settings.
This position requires a minimum of two years of Laboratory Assistant I level or a combination of equivalent education and relevant experience. Solid wet laboratory skills and ability to examine, cut, and freeze tissue specimens required.
Individual is expected to interact effectively and professionally with Operating Room, Pathology, and research staff. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and good judgment. Prefer knowledge of PC Word processing and clinical database software. Basic knowledge of human anatomy and medicine a major plus.
