Job Summary / Purpose

Under the direction of the Pathology Manager and Supervisors or the Lead Technicians the Lab Assistant Assists in specimen collection, monitoring of Pathology specimens, clerical duties, receptionist duties, processing of specimens, generates computer reports, order enter of tests, liaison to customers using Memorial Hospital Pathology, participates in inventory control, Assists in Frozen Section, and other procedures in the department.

Essential Key Job Responsibilities

  • Follows established departmental policies/procedures pertaining to specimen collection, positively identifies

Patients, accurately labels specimens while accessioning.

  • Maintains confidentiality of patients department and hospital related information according to established

Policies.

  • Complies with all hospital personnel policies and procedures, participates in all required departmental

And hospital education in-service's within the required time frame, assumes responsibility for reading

posted information.

  • Assures the correct specimen and quantity of specimen is submitted for analysis.

  • Participates in an approved competency program that demonstrates knowledge and skill and includes

specimen collection, specimen processing, and care of patients of all ages.

  • Answers the phone by the third ring in a professional manner identifying yourself and processing the call

Appropriately including taking and delivering messages promptly and accurately and/or routing each call

as necessary.

  • Process phone inquiries from nursing units, physicians' offices, reference laboratories, outside hospital

accounts, etc. with minimum technologist assistance.

  • Identifies specimen/requisitions discrepancies and resolve by calling for specimen or request as needed.

  • Continually makes best use of time during their shift by assuming responsibility for communicating pertinent

information with co-workers; completion of starting of shift, coordinating lunch/breaks and daily tasks in a

manner which meets the needs of the laboratory.

  • Demonstrates responsibility and flexibility in maintaining work schedules consistent with the needs of the

Pathology.

  • Assists in training new employees and students; willingly assist those with insufficient knowledge or inability

to complete assigned tasks or duties.

  • Process laboratory requisitions, register with accurate patient information, correct tests ordered, complete

Test ordered.

  • Process specimens received from an outside account, register requisitions with accurate patient information,

Order all tests and correct tests, unbag specimens documenting specimens, receiving and missing or wrong

Specimens received, label specimen with the correct bar code labels, deliver specimens Pathology/Cytology

for Testing in a timely manner.

  • Complete Pathology process improvement for all specimen or requisition discrepancy all

clients should be called to notify them of the discrepancies.

  • Scan and QC requisition into Pathology LIS System.

  • Perform other duties as requested

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED

Experience:

  • Previous Phlebotomy experience is preferred. Basic computer skills preferred but not required. Good Communication skills. Ability to work Independently and represent the institution in a professional Manner. Excellent organizational skills.
