About the Job

Under supervision incumbents perform one or more standard repetitive laboratory and/or field experimental procedures that require technical scientific knowledge and skills which might be expected from incumbents at the college "lower division" level or from incumbents who have acquired equivalent knowledge and skills through experience.

Technical assignments at this level typically include duties such as: preparing samples for radiochemical analyses, preparing complex reagents and media using basic ingredients, processing serum from whole blood, preparing components required for media making, preparing specimens for examination by professional and/or academic personnel, preparing concentration specimens, removing fluids and preservatives by pipetting and using solvents, preparing smear and imprint impressions, processing and sectioning tissues, preparing and staining slides, grinding tissues and placing in suspension for passage into host animals, and dissecting laboratory animals exposing tissues for examination.

Incumbents may, when in charge of laboratory equipment and supplies, keep records; maintain, order, store and dispense a limited variety of standard supplies for a complex of student laboratories; assure availability of materials used by students in laboratory classes such as chemical compounds, unknowns, microscopes, culture media and models; set up and maintain equipment such as fume hoods, fans, emergency lights, water drains and special fixtures; and assist in the assembly, testing and operation of complex laboratory equipment.

Qualifications

  • High school or a General Education Diploma.

  • Two years of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and one year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Skill to organize and prioritize a diversified workload with attention to detail and multiple deadlines.

  • Responsible for maintaining clean and safe work environment and keeping laboratory stocked.

  • Demonstrated ability to function efficiently and well in a team environment.

  • Effective interpersonal skills to establish & maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, staff and students.

  • Demonstrated organizational skills for field / lab usage assignments and coordination.

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate database files.

  • Perform word processing using Microsoft Word and data entry on PC and/or Mac.

  • Responsible for maintaining clean and safe work environment and keeping laboratory stocked.

  • Knowledge of routine maintenance and proper use of laboratory equipment.

About the Job Under the general supervision of the Chemistry Instructional Lab Coordinator, the Lab Assistant's primary responsibility will be assisting in the setup and maintenance of the chemistry instructional labs. This will include preparation of chemical solutions for laboratory experiments. The incumbent will also be responsible for operational support for the chemistry instructional labs, including organizing and monitoring supplies, directing student assistants, requesting orders, maintaining lab room equipment inventories and maintenance/repair of lab room equipment. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES * Provide support for Instructional Laboratories * Set up and tear down General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Inorganic lab course experiments. * Maintain levels of chemicals and supplies used in course each week. * Attend weekly instructional meetings when schedule allows. * Assist teaching staff with chemical, supplies, and equipment issues. * Assist teaching staff with safety and emergency procedures. * Train and direct student assistants in safe handling of chemicals, safe laboratory practices, and support activities. * Provide instructional materials to teaching staff as needed * Lab Experiment Preparation From written procedures and formulas, and/or verbal instructions: * Independently plan and prepare chemical solutions for instructional laboratory experiments. * Test sensitive chemical solutions for viability. * Plan and prepare course supplies. * Plan and prepare lab room equipment. * Laboratory Maintenance * Maintain working knowledge of lab safety and emergency procedures; assure compliance with proper procedure. * Properly process, monitor, and dispose of hazardous materials. * Report facility issues immediately to Lab Coordinators, or facilities management if Lab Coordinators unavailable. * Maintain chemical inventory for chemistry lab courses in electronic format. * Monitor course supply inventories, request orders to ensure adequate level of supplies at all times. * Maintain lab room equipment inventory in electronic format. * Perform inventory checks at the end of each semester and locate lab room equipment as necessary. * Maintain and prepare lab room equipment for use, checking for proper repair. * Prepare lab room equipment for storage (clean and/or disassemble). * Ensure the lab preparation areas and the class laboratories are maintained in a clean and orderly manner. * Assist in the development and electronic maintenance of procedural lab documentation to support all lab operations. * Other Administrative Duties * Assist in hiring of student assistants as requested. * Provide performance evaluation information of student assistants to Lab Coordinator. * Assist with School events. * Other duties as assigned. Qualifications EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE * Bachelor's Degree in chemistry or other related science.
