Responsibilities

Customer service in lab reception.

  • Greets patients, performs check-in process, and is responsive to questions and patient needs.

Order management

  • Evaluates patient orders for completeness and follows up as needed.

  • Effectively and accurately manages patient orders to ensure adherence to regulatory and billing requirements.

  • Performs scheduling, ordering and releasing as appropriate in Electronic Medical Record, following policies and procedures.

Specimen collection and phlebotomy supply maintenance.

  • Reviews orders and verifies patient identification.

  • Demonstrates the ability to assess and react effectively to unique patient needs.

  • Instructs patients accurately on procedures and protocols.

  • Identifies and uses appropriate collection method to obtain samples for testing (venipuncture or capillary puncture).

  • Collects samples and labels specimens correctly following all procedures and protocols.

  • Evaluates acceptability of specimens

  • Stocks, rotates and requests phlebotomy supplies (as assigned) on a regular basis to ensure proper availability in the work area.

  • Assists with SOP development and training in work area.

  • Follows all federal regulations including CAP, OSHA, COLA, CLIA, and HIPAA.

Specimen Processing and testing

  • Performs processing of specimens with strict adherence to the quality control and quality assurance policies of AHL and in accordance with federal regulations (CLIA, CAP, HIPPA, etc.).

  • Performs waived testing, as assigned.

Maintain required safety, education, and competency requirements

  • Completes required annual CEU for job position per AHL policy.

  • Completes training and competency requirements in a timely manner.

  • Follows and demonstrates understanding of policies & procedures in daily work.

Other Duties as assigned

Additional responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Performs various clerical duties.

  • Assists with creation of staff desk assignment schedule, as directed.

  • Attends and participates in department and other meetings, as assigned.

  • Acts as a student preceptor.

  • Trains and provides oversight of new staff/students.

  • May work independently with additional responsibilities in another non-lab area

Education

  • Minimum High School diploma or GED.

  • Prefer specific training in phlebotomy, including internship, in a healthcare field.

For diplomas earned outside of the United States a record of diploma/transcript equivalency evaluation by a foreign credentialing agency must be provided at time of hire.

This position performs manual and automated waived, moderate and highly complex analytical testing according to policy, procedure and regulatory requirements. This position is accountable for one or more technical work areas, which includes oversight of key operators, regulatory compliance, new method project plans, technical communications, and cost-effective inventory control. The MLS Lead may be a document owner of technical procedures, forms, and misc. documents. The MLS Lead trains students and new employees, coordinates preceptor activity, participates in system competency development, and provides the direct observation of staff for the annual competency program. This position functions as site lab liaison to system Technical Specialist and serves as Charge Tech in absence of Supervisor/Manager. Primary Duties: * Evaluates patient orders for completeness and follows up as needed. * Performs scheduling, ordering and releasing, as appropriate in AMR, following reception policies and procedures. * Review orders and identify correct patient. * Identify and use appropriate collection method to obtain samples for testing (venipuncture or capillary puncture). * Instruct patients accurately on procedures and protocols. * Verify correct patient identification. * Collects sample and label specimen correctly. * Demonstrate an ability to assess and react effectively to unique patient needs. * Perform processing (as required) with strict adherence to the quality control and quality assurance policies of AHL in order to provide the patients and providers with the most accurate and timely test results possible * Prioritizes work assignments/tasks. * Performs analytical tests according to policy and procedures. * Evaluates results for accuracy within set guidelines, and resolves complex test problems. * Recognizes, communicates, and documents results that require action according policy/procedures. * Follow all federal regulations including CAP, OSHA, COLA, CLIA, and HIPAA. * Performs and documents required & advanced instrument maintenance, and quality control; takes appropriate remedial action. Ensures appropriate record retention. * Performs proficiency testing as assigned, per AHL policy and procedure. * Stock, rotate and request supplies (as assigned) on a regular basis to ensure proper availability in the work area. * Maintains oversight as the key site technical resource of one or more work areas, and provides additional communication, education, and technical support to staff. * Oversees proficiency testing for assigned dept. which includes staff assignments, submission and review of results, analyze summary of findings and appropriate actions are taken. * Coordinates and assists in the development of required competencies, including timely direct observation of staff. * Active participation in AHL technical resource meetings, and timely completes assignments. * Attend and participate in department and clinic staff meetings. * Ability to perform waived testing * Ability to handle multiple priorities and projects. * May function as Charge Tech in absence of Supervisor/Manager. * Train others in work area and oversight of new employee and student orientation * Actively involved in procedure writing, technical procedures, forms, misc. documents, method validation, and implementation. * Participate in AHL and/or hospital projects and committees. * May assist with department scheduling * Performs additional duties and projects within the department, and in collaboration with other departments. * Complete required annual CEU for job position per AHL policy. * Complete training and competency requirements timely. * Follows and demonstrates understanding of policies & procedures in daily work.
