DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, incumbent will assist the Principal Investigator and other postdocs and senior researchers with understanding developmental patterning using Drosophilia as a model to understand gene regulation via cis-regulatory elements using a variety of standard fly genetics, biochemistry and molecular biology procedures. This position will also be responsible for CRISPR/Cas9 procedures.

Incumbent will collect, classify and file scientific material, modify media solutions, perform standard microtechnique procedures, distinguish between treated and untreated tissues, quantify and record data, utilize bioinformatics tools to assist with data analysis, and maintain lab website. Incumbent will also assist with care and maintenance of Drosophila mutant lines; using a stereo microscope or light microscopy, perform routine fruit fly work (sort flies, collect virgins twice a day, set up crosses, transfer stocks, screen flies for mutant phenotypes, isolate DNA from flies, etc).

The incumbent will assist with ongoing molecular research in the lab with basic experimental techniques like DNA mini or maxi prep, gel extraction, and PCRs. Perform routine laboratory duties: wash and autoclave glassware, maintain records, maintain lab equipment and supplies, maintain cleanliness of lab; prepare buffers, media, and solutions. May oversee purchasing, receiving, storing, distribution, and maintenance of laboratory equipment; or train lower-level assistants or students in the lab; and perform other general lab duties as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from high school or a GED and three years of laboratory experience OR two years of college including courses in biochemistry, molecular biology, biophysics, basic genetics OR an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • College level course or equivalent in general laboratory techniques and molecular techniques including the ability to prepare solutions and use a pH meter.

  • Knowledge of CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing and RNA/DNA editing techniques.

  • Laboratory experience with basic and general techniques in molecular biology including DNA and RNA preparation and extraction, molecular cloning, gel electrophoresis, PCR, etc.

  • Demonstrated skill to use standard lab equipment such as centrifuge, microscope, balances, etc.

  • Demonstrated skill to culture and handle Drosophila.

  • Experience with basic microbiological and sterile techniques.

  • Skill to follow multistep assays and procedures.

  • Ability and organizational skills to keep accurate records of scientific data in well-organized lab notebook.

  • Familiarity with Apple and PC computers and associated word processing and spreadsheet software with a willingness and ability to update and increase skills and knowledge as needed.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Good interpersonal communication skills including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility with students, staff, faculty, and visitors of various cultures and backgrounds.

  • Knowledge/understanding and at least some experience with Safety Data Sheets, hazard communication and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. Familiarity with a Chemical Hygiene Plan addressing safety precautions including appropriate clothing and shoes, safe handling of chemicals, use of protective items. Willingness and ability to keep safety training current and consistent with research involvement.

  • Knowledge of purchasing and reimbursement procedures. Skill in maintaining steady levels of lab supplies, maintaining purchasing records, and training others in purchasing procedures.

  • Willingness and demonstrated ability to embrace and consistently uphold the principles of community for a collaborative work environment.

  • Enthusiasm for learning and a genuine interest in scientific research. Willingness and ability to learn new skills, research methods, and scientific principles.

  • Ability to learn new experimental methods as required. Ability to work independently or collaboratively on a research project.

  • Ability to perform standard microtechnique procedures (including knowledge of staining) and distinguish between treated and untreated tissues, including immunohistochemistry techniques, tissue preparation, microdissection and sectioning, antibody staining and microscopy.

  • Ability to perform microdissection and sectioning of tissues.

  • Ability to perform olfactory behavioral assays

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must be willing to work occasional overtime (evenings or weekends) based on needs of experiments.

  • Must be able to work safely with lab chemicals.

  • Manual dexterity for working with of fruit flies and legible labeling

  • Must be able to lift at least 12 lbs.

  • Background check required.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $51,490 - $61,262 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $24.66 - $29.34

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
