Minimum Annual or Hourly Rate $15.05/hour Salary Band: CS 14 Job Summary/Basic Function:
To contribute to the lab's daily operations by managing all aspects of the lab's animal program, including but not limited to, animal colony management, equipment maintenance, laboratory personnel training, inventory management and performing research and development activities
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma (or GED) and 1.5 years full-time related work experience OR, two years of post-secondary education and six months full-time related work experience.
Excellent verbal/communication skills.
Must be able to review, comprehend, and comply with all standard operating procedures.
Considerable knowledge of applicable rules and regulations involving the husbandry of laboratory animals.
Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science.
Must possess a valid United States driver's license for at least one year and maintain eligibility to operate University motor vehicles.
Preferred Qualifications Essential Functions and percent of time:
50% : Research and Development Activities
Prepares animals for aseptic surgery and assists during surgical procedures
Performs experiments and records data according to standard operating protocols
Performs statistical and graphical analysis of data
Develops and tests new laboratory procedures and experimental protocols
15% Breeding Colony Management
Maintains digital database to document breeders, offspring, and experimental animals
Develops animal breeding strategies to maintain animal colony and prepare for upcoming experimental studies
Conducts genotyping to identify genetic background of offspring
Communicates with Laboratory Animal Resources staff, Transnetyx, and supervisor regarding breeding colony
20%Experimental Studies Management
Coordinates upcoming experimental studies
Supervises the research activities of laboratory personnel
Assists lab personnel in the execution of experimental studies
Assesses, records, and reports the health status of experimental animals
Communicates with Laboratory Animal Resources staff, lab personnel, and supervisor regarding experimental animals
10%Animal Program Operations
Remains familiar with regulatory requirements specific to animal use and ensures laboratory personnel are in-compliance with all local, state and federal regulations
Ensures laboratory personnel complete relevant training (procedures, safety and equipment)
Reviews animal use protocols to stay abreast of ongoing research projects
Assists with development and implementation of policies and standard operating procedures
Reports animal and personnel issues to supervisor
3% Equipment Maintenance, Inventory Management & Housekeeping
Performs routine equipment cleaning and maintenance
Manages inventory and ensures all reagents and supplies are available when needed
Ensures that the lab's animal facility is cleaned/sanitized and kept in an orderly manner

Working Conditions
Laboratory Animal Resources Facility. There are conditions, equipment and materials, present which require proper handling to ensure safety. Requires moderate physical effort to include frequent lifting of up to 40 pounds. Frequent walking, bending, and standing. May be required to work on weekends and holidays. Physical exam required.
Special contract position with continuation dependent on funding.
