Lab and Research Technician 2 employees provide increasingly complex technical support for projects and may engage in increasingly complex scientific experiments. May handle more sophisticated administrative and logistical tasks. Lab and Research Technician 2 employees operate under supervision with a degree of independence when following set protocols and procedures.

  • This position provides technical and administrative support for a marine computational biogeochemistry research group. The incumbent is responsible for statistical analysis and scientific visualization of ocean field data, remote sensing imagery, and numerical model output. Additional tasks include data management and the development, implementation, and evaluation of numerical model simulations. Administrative tasks include preparation of materials for scientific presentations and publications and training of students on statistical and visualization software. Incumbent interacts with and assists other laboratories with similar techniques.

Lab and Research Technician 2 employees operate under supervision with a degree of independence when following set protocols and procedures.

  • Perform similar duties to the Technician 1, such as performing analyses, participating in research or clinical work involving treatment operations and experiments with animals to include care and feeding, cage cleaning and sanitization, and observation during post-operative or treatment periods, and maintaining equipment and apparatuses.

  • Coordinate and participate in a variety of routine technical duties by providing assistance to clinical and research staff in testing, determinations, and experiments.

  • Assist in evaluating research methods, procedures, and techniques, based on established objectives.

  • Provide basic assistance to researchers in manipulating, computing, and analyzing data using specialized statistical computer software.

  • May perform certain surgical procedures on small lab animals.

  • Assist with training other staff members on procedures; may supervise students or volunteers.

  • Assist Principal Investigators and senior staff in developing new strategies and techniques for experimentation.

  • Technician 2 employees in Social Sciences and Humanities will provide routine, technical, and administrative support to research projects.

  • May contact and coordinate schedules with study subjects, handle information intake, and record and track results.

  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

The hourly rate for this position will be $16.83 - $18.27 commensurate with qualifications.

Education: Associate's degree in Oceanography or related science by the start date. A Bachelor's degree in Oceanography or related science is preferred.

Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree Oceanography or related science will be considered in lieu of experience.

Licensure: None.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work requiring finer finger manipulation.

VIEW JOBS 9/30/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-12-29T00:00 The Department of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care seeks applications for a Laboratory and Research Technician 2 position. The employee will work under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey Sturek, MD, PhD. Dr. Sturek is a Pulmonary and Critical Care physician with a clinical and research focus on translational pulmonary immunology as pertains to pulmonary fibrosis and oncopulmonology. His laboratory work is based in the Cardiovascular Research Center in MR-5 and is in collaboration with Dr. Coleen McNamara, MD. The laboratory group is large with four laboratory research specialists, four current graduate students including 2 MD-PhD students, and a research assistant professor, providing a stimulating and collegial environment for professional growth and development. This will be an excellent educational opportunity for either those interested in a career as a laboratory specialist focusing on translational immunology, or recent college graduates looking for 1-2 "gap years" of experience to build their CV prior to applying to graduate or medical training. Opportunities for authorship are available if desired. Techniques in the laboratory span the full range of translational research including cutting-edge CRISPR gene editing, in vitro B lymphocyte function assays, murine models of disease, high-dimensional immunophenotyping by mass cytometry (CyTOF), patient sample processing, and clinical data analysis. Experience in these or related techniques is a bonus but not required as the candidate will learn on the job from the other experienced team members. Job responsibilities may include: basic laboratory maintenance, in vitro assays in molecular and cell biology, assisting with mouse colony management and genotyping, flow cytometry sample processing and running, mass cytometry sample preparation, and patient sample processing and storage. A Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences or a related field, or associates plus 2 years experience is required.
