The Department of Pathology at University of Virginia School of Medicine is seeking a Laboratory Specialist Intermediate. This position is located in the lab of Adam N. Goldfarb, M.D. Responsibilities of the position include:

A. Day to day management of laboratory operations

  • Maintenance of databases and laboratory reagent catalogs.

  • Ordering supplies for laboratory personnel in a timely manner.

  • Maintain protocol libraries

  • Train students and junior lab members in biochemical, molecular and animal husbandry/veterinary techniques used in laboratory.

  • Manage schedules for laboratory meetings and monthly Journal Club involving four laboratories.

B. Design execution, documentation and interpretation of experiments in hematology research

  • Execution of complex experimental procedures with appropriate controls.

  • Assessment of relevant literature and proposal for new experiments.

  • Development and refinement of research protocols.

  • Scientific interaction with department members and members of outside institutions.

  • Data obtained from experiments are expected to be used for publications and grant applications.

C. Oversight of mouse breeding colonies

  • Maintenance of breeding colonies with genotype information; efficient, complete and compliant animal experiments.

  • Plan and execute complex breeding program to obtain mice for experiments and back cross to different genetic strain.

  • Manage monthly animal breeding data and fiscal data as mandated by UVA vivarium. Place all orders, coordinate transfers and arrange quarantine for new acquisitions.

  • Act as "point person" for semi-annual ACUC inspections, and maintain compliance with animal protocol and drug records.

D. Oversight of lab safety and "controlled substances" drug programs

  • Maintain compliance with radioactivity, biohazard and chemical safety and shipment of controlled/infectious substances.

  • Act as "point person" in safety audits with members of Environmental Health and Safety.

  • Put into place a drug "controlled substances" compliance program that includes new rules, protocols for compliance with both the Virginia Board of Pharmacy and the US DEA.

This is a restricted position and its continuance is dependent upon the continuation of funding.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Bachelor's degree in related science.

Experience: At least six years experience. Master's degree in related field may substitute for required experience. Mice breeding experience.

Licensure: None.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.

Incumbent provides laboratory support by performing experiments including to support the research interests of the Principal Investigator.
