Head Start Teacher (Center Based) Classification: Classified Salary Range: Head Start Salary Schedule Work Year: 186 Days OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY Under general supervision of the site supervisor or Head Start Program Director, provides a center based program for children that meets the Performance standards of Early Head Start and Regional Head Start. To carry out a regular schedule students enrolled in the center based program. Early and Regional Head Starts mission is to enhance the development of very young children, promote healthy family functioning, and promote parental involvement in curriculum planning. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsibility to: • Recruit children eligible to participate in Head Start within the school attendance area. • Enroll eligible children and inform their parents of their role and responsibilities in relationship to the program. • Identify each child's instructional needs through an on-going use of formal and informal assessment processes and complete child assessments and screenings and report child's progress to his parent/guardian by conducting parent conferences and home visits. • Develop and implement an instructional plan this is developmentally appropriate for each child that addresses the child's specific needs and interests integrating all program components. • Supervise and mentor/train paraprofessionals. • Prepare Lesson Plans to promote school readiness and coordinate daily activities. • Develop and maintain a safe learning environment for young children that is efficient and effective. • Implement required curriculums. • Participate in staff development activities/trainings. • Attend parent meetings, trainings, and activities. • Provide transition activities to the children and parents when they are leaving Head Start program and entering another school/setting. • Assist with program evaluation and redesign. • Prepare and maintain classroom records required for compli

Requirements / Qualifications

EDUCATION: • AA degree in Child Development or related field required plus a valid California Child Development Teacher's permit. • BA in Child Development or related field preferred, plus a valid California Child Development Teacher's permit is required Experience: • Two years' experience working with children 3-5 in a human service setting such as home visits and or in a classroom setting.

Special Requirements: • Fingerprint clearance required. • TB clearance required. Immunizations for Influenza, DTAP, MMR and Hepatitis B Physical (Health Screening) required • Bilingual highly desirable. • Possession of a valid California Driver's License and own transportation and proof of auto insurance. . OTHER CHARACTERISTICS: • Willingness to work overtime with additional pay as necessary. • Perform routine and repetitive work efficiently.

Knowledge of: • Rules and regulations relating to the establishment and operation of the Head Start program. • Effective teaching strategies in a child development program. • Effective communication techniques for dealing with a wide variety of individuals and groups. • General concepts of child growth and development and child behavior characteristics • Knowledge of and ability to problem solve, handle crisis situations, and work with families and children of various cultures from low-income backgrounds. • Approaches to working with families that is empathic, nonjudgmental, respectful and professional. Ability to: • Provide a learning environment for children, which includes a variety of experiences to foster the development of social, emotional, physical and intellectual competence. • Assess each child's social, emotional, physical and intellectual level of functioning ad design a plan for instruction based on the developmental needs established. • Integrate program components of health, nutrition, parent participation, parent education, social services and mental health into the daily program of educational activities and implement required curriculums. • Maintain required adult supervision in the classroom by involving parent and community volunteers in the educational activities of the program and supervising their volunteer efforts. • Plan and provide training for the Paraprofessionals, parents, community volunteers and cross-age tutors in developing understanding and skill in working with the age groups served. • Inform parents of the child's educational plan and identify activities which parents can utilize as educational activities in the home. • Read and explain rules, regulations and procedures. • Maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work. • Learn and utilize basic methods and procedures to be followed in instructional settings. • Communicate effectively with Head Start parents and children. • Ability to compose clear, complete, and concise reports independently using correct grammar and spelling. • Be flexible in scheduling days and times to make home visits and manage tasks. • Educate parents and be able to articulate general concepts of child growth, development and child behavior. • Work effectively with children, parents, and staff members. • Carry out oral and written directions. • Communicate intent/philosophy of program to families in community. • Handle stress from daily instruction and care of young children. • Operate a computer and basic knowledge of common office software. • Operate necessary program equipment. ______________________________________________________________________________ • Perform clerical work. • Maintain positive attitude. • Sustain cooperative relationships with those contacted in course of work.
