SUMMARY Music Specialists facilitate service learning, organize trips, conduct outreach and recruitment, and partner with the community on service based projects. They attend monthly workshops, provide supervision to tutors/counselors, and provide quarterly reports to meet New York Edge and funder requirements. Our Academic, Activities and Sports Specialists are responsible for creating lessons, projects and objectives that meet the individual students' needs. He/she fosters an atmosphere of fun and learning and serves as a role model to youth, always conducting him/herself in the utmost professional manner and maintaining appropriate boundaries. They are also responsible for maintaining target number of participants. Music Specialists The Music Activity Specialist position requires experience working with kids, teaching music to various age levels and/or working inside the public schools. The applicant should be versatile in all mediums and musically inclined. The applicant should also have some knowledge in music composition. The Music specialist will be responsible for conducting daily classes for our Champions After School art programs. Help develop a larger music program within Champions After School, by conducting activity whether it is chorus, drumline, band, jazz band, African drumming, music composition etc. Work collaboratively with the performing arts team and site director in producing on site culminating events and organizational events. The Music Specialist must be committed to keeping our after school art programs to a high standard. Art Specialists utilize and adapt the New York State Arts Learning Standards along with the New York Edge curriculum in order to create an engaging and awarding activity that encourages participation in New York Edge programs. Essential Job Functions: * Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible. * Organize, lead, and promote interest in daily music activities to explore the world of sound and to create a musical language of their own through warm-up, rhythmic practice, center activity and combinations as well as activities that lead to full performances. In addition, plan trips to see shows and workshops outside the site to enhance further learning about various cultures. * Use music as a tool for students to use in order to further develop functional living skills i.e. fine and gross motor skills, communication skills, etc. * Take an active role in class by playing, singing, and listening, while encouraging students to participate and support them by responding musically, ultimately supporting the students' creative development. * Organize performance groups, and direct their rehearsals, put on performances at the site and prepare to audition for the Annual New York Edge Performing Arts Showcase. * Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students. * Ascertain and interpret group interests, evaluate equipment and facilities, and adapt activities to meet the requirements of New York Edge along with the student's interests. * Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities. * Explain principles, techniques, and safety procedures to participants in the activities, and demonstrate use of materials and equipment. * Greet new arrivals to activities, introducing them to other students, explaining the rules, and encouraging participation. * Evaluate activity to determine if they are producing desired results. * Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests. * Progressive development of student skills leading to a final project * Provide support during the academic/homework hour * Promotes positive character development in all youth * Most New York Edge Specialists are expected to provide homework support during Academic hour. Required skills: * Must be knowledgeable and skilled in music and have prior experience successfully teaching and instructing youth in music * Must have prior performance experience and stage/theater etiquette and understanding * Must have knowledge and prior experience teaching music and putting a performance together * Must have knowledge in music terminology, history and resources to develop a well rounded and cohesive study in music throughout the school year * Must be responsible, reliable and punctual! * Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required * Must be adaptable to the work environment such as hybrid program model availability: onsite and remote including ability to work from home or other non-school site location readily and throughout the day. * Must be remote access prepared which includes: including web/internet/broadband accessibility and reliable cell phone devices equipped for texting and talking. * Must possess and be able to maintain throughout the assignment; the technology (hardware, software, internet access and a working cell phone) required to perform the duties of the position including communications with supervisor and other staff members. * Physical requirements, including ability to wear all PPE required, climb stairs, lift children, perform CPR, communicate by voice, monitor and evaluate events visually and aurally. * As an essential worker it is expected at this time, that you have schedule flexibility based on State, Local and Federal pandemic management conditions and requirements (e.g. school closures, training, emergency orders) Qualifications: * High school diploma * Minimum of two years of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is required. * Must have passion for New York Edge mission and demonstrated interest in the field of education and youth development. * Able to work late afternoons and/or evenings. After-School hours can span from 2:50pm-6:50pm, with most programs running from 3-6pm. * Certifications and credentials in respective dance activity highly preferred. * Candidates who are qualified to lead instruction in more than one activity preferred as well. Location: Five Boroughs Time: After School Hours, 2:30PM - 6:00PM Arts Specialists will be required to report to the school building and interact with staff, students, parents and school administration while following DOH Covid-19 guidelines such as wearing PPE and remaining socially distant. At time of offer and acceptance, the job requires safety and security clearances through the Department of Education and Department of Health.
