The Coastal Animal Services Authority (CASA) is seeking a qualified individual to serve as a Kennel Attendant. Under the immediate supervision of the Shelter Manager, the Kennel Attendant is responsible for maintaining healthy, safe, and sanitary facilities for shelter animals and the public; and provides all animals with proper, humane handling and care.

This benefited part-time position works approximately 22 hours a week but may be scheduled more based on the department needs. The typical work schedule is Saturday & Sunday 7:00am-4:30pm with a 4 hour shift on Friday and may involve some holidays.

Essential Functions

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Clean, disinfect and sterilize kennels, cages, equipment, runs and other areas of facility as directed.

  • Clean and replenish food and water bowls.

  • Visually inspect and monitor shelter animals, including those that are isolated or quarantined; recognize animal health problems or unusual behavior and bring them to the attention of the shelter manager.

  • Assist with animals when veterinarian performs routine examinations.

  • Administer injections and medications to all shelter animals

  • Responds to public inquiries regarding animals and the shelter; provides information within the areas of assignment; assists in the release and adoption of animals; provides from counter customer service to patrons; shows animals upon request; answers phones.

  • Required to work weekends and holidays as assigned.

  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Various breeds of dogs, cats and other domestic animals and wildlife.

  • Principles of animal behavior and practices of humane animal care.

  • Principles and practices used in dealing with the public.

  • Basic techniques of kennel cleaning and maintenance.

  • Basic principles of record keeping.

  • Occupational hazards and safety practices necessary in the area of animal services

Skill to:

  • Operate equipment and other tools used in the cleaning and maintenance of kennels.

  • Operate modern office equipment including computer equipment and software programs.

Ability to:

  • Handle animals in a safe and effective manner, including but not limited to, muzzling techniques, collection and impoundment.

  • Learn, understand , and interpret rules and regulations governing the impounding and release of animals.

  • Recognize normal and abnormal animal behavior.

  • Prepare and maintain accurate and complete records.

  • Maintain effective audio/visual discrimination and perception to the degree necessary for the successful performance of assigned duties.

  • Maintain mental capacity, which allows for effective interaction and communication with others, understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Experience:

Experience in the handling of animals.

Training:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Environmental Conditions:

Animal shelter environment; exposure to inclement weather, noise, dust, toxic chemicals, potentially hazardous situations.

Physical Conditions:

Functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary to perform light or moderate lifting and carrying, bending and stooping; and standing for prolonged periods of time. Occasional lifting of 50 pounds.
