Job Description

We have a great opportunity for a talented, multidisciplinary, and self-motivated Visual Interaction Designer to join our product team at Kaplan, the world leader in test prep. Working out of our New York, NY office, and as part of our small, dynamic team, you'll be working on validating new product ideas through design thinking, prototyping, and user testing activities.

Responsibilities include:

  • Translating high-level business requirements into designs including functional user flows, wireframes, prototypes (low-, mid-, and high-fidelity), and user interfaces

  • Writing, carrying out, and synthesizing prototype usability testing to inform design iterations and UX decisions; iterating designs based on validated learning

  • Working with business and UX leads to co-evolve user experience solutions through an iterative design process

  • Working effectively with front end developers to build coded prototypes of designs and bring ideas to life

  • Advocating the implementation of UI guidelines, standards, and requirements that serve as the foundation for designing cohesive experiences


  • Bachelor's degree in design, human-computer interaction, or related field

  • 3+ years of professional experience, preferably in a consumer-facing company

  • Passion for user-centered design and the education space

  • Ability to understand customer needs, motivations, and behaviors and translate them into design hypotheses

  • Excellent visual design skills, with strong abilities in typography, color application, composition and hierarchy; ability to effectively apply and adapt brand identity standards

  • In-depth knowledge of user-centered design principles and human interface guidelines, standards, conventions, and best practices

  • Knowledge of and experience designing responsive user experiences; experience designing with accessibility standards a plus

  • Intimate knowledge of Sketch (required), Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop and Illustrator; InDesign a plus), PowerPoint, and Keynote

  • Solid knowledge of current user research, usability testing, and prototyping tools (e.g. InVision, Principle)

  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal; must be able to communicate clearly with existing customers, potential product users, the core product team, as well as other teams in the company

  • Experience with rapid, iterative solution delivery methods

  • Excellent attention to detail, quality of work, and time management skills

  • Positive, friendly attitude, desire for collaboration, and solid work ethic

Bonus skills:

  • Interface writing/editing

  • HTML5 / CSS3

  • Experience with mobile/apps

  • Experience with Agile/Lean UX practices
