JOB SUMMARY

The Klamath Center for Education and Training (K-CET) is seeking a dedicated and dynamic ESL Instructor specializing in adult education. The ESL Instructor will be responsible for designing and delivering effective English language instruction to adult learners, ensuring they acquire the language skills necessary for personal and professional success. This position will involve multilevel classes, employing both andragogical and pedagogical approaches to meet the diverse needs of adult learners. Additionally, the role will encompass various responsibilities, including classroom instruction, student advising, tutoring, outreach, and administrative duties related to student success. This position will also contribute to, but not be the primary responsible party for the accreditation process for KCC's American English Language Institute's Intensive English Program. Additionally, there may be opportunity for professional growth within the organization in future roles with increased responsibility, which would be matched with opportunities for corresponding compensation.

  • Team Collaboration and Interdepartmental Cooperation:The ESL instructor will work closely with instructors and administrative staff to ensure the smooth operation of the department.Team collaboration involves sharing best practices, materials, and resources to enhance teaching effectiveness and student outcomes. It includes collaborative efforts between departments to provide holistic support toadult learners in achieving their educational and personal goals.

  • Communication:Demonstrate excellent communication, interpersonal, and cross-cultural skills, with the ability to build rapport and establish trust with adult learners.

  • Curriculum Development: Develop and implement comprehensive ESL curriculum aligned to the Oregon Adult English Language Proficiency Standards (OAELPS) tailored to the multilevel needs and goals of adult learners. Employ andragogical principles, emphasizing self-directed learning and real-life application, alongside pedagogical strategies for learners requiring more structured guidance.

  • Needs Assessment: Conduct thorough assessments to identify the language proficiency levels, learning styles, and individual goals of adult learners and to inform instructional planning and differentiation.

  • Interactive Instruction: Engage adult learners in interactive and communicative language activities that promote active participation, collaboration, and real-life application of English language skills. Adapt instructional strategies to accommodate learners at various proficiency levels.

  • Work and Life Skills Integration: Integrate relevant work and life skills, such as financial, health, and digital literacy, into ESL instruction to empower adult learners to navigate various aspects of daily life in an English-speaking environment.

  • Career Development Support: Provide guidance and support to adult learners in developing English language skills essential for career advancement, including resume writing, job interview preparation, and workplace communication.

  • Cultural Competence: Foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment that respects the diverse cultural backgrounds and experiences of adult learners. Incorporate andragogical principles of learner autonomy and collaboration to promote cross-cultural understanding and communication.

  • Individualized Support: Offer personalized assistance and feedback to adult learners through one-on-one tutoring sessions, small group activities, and targeted interventions as needed.

  • Technology Integration: Incorporate technology tools and resources into ESL instruction to enhance learning outcomes, increase digital literacy skills, and provide access to online language learning platforms and resources. Use technology to facilitate instructional delivery for in-person classrooms and Zoom sessions to accommodate diverse learning needs and preferences. Utilize Canvas for course management and teaching.

  • Student Advising: Provide academic and career advising to adult learners, assisting them in setting and achieving their educational and professional goals.

  • Outreach: Engage in outreach activities to promote ESL programs, recruit adult learners, and foster partnerships with community organizations.

  • Administrative Duties: Perform administrative tasks related to student success, such as maintaining records, tracking attendance and progress, and participating in program evaluation and continuous improvement efforts.

  • Professional Development: Stay current with best practices in adult education and teaching English as a Second Language through ongoing professional development activities and training opportunities. Complete required professional development activities dictated by the Higher Education Coordinating Commission (HECC), Title II regulations, and organizational leadership in the given timeframe.

  • Duties as Assigned: Fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned to support departmental goals and contribute to the overall success of the K-CET program.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

The K-CET ESL Instructor will work in a community college environment. Some evening or weekend hours may be required to accommodate adult learners' schedules. The position may involve working with adult learners facing various life challenges and socioeconomic backgrounds. Physical demands include frequently moving from stationary to sitting positions and standing to walking.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in education, TESOL/TEFL, or a related field.

Preferred:

  • Experience with culturally and linguistically diverse students from a variety of ages, backgrounds, and learning differences.

  • Experience instructing adult learners.

  • Fluency in Spanish may be advantageous but is not required.
